Also just in case anyone didn't know, always board first, the advantage is crucial. You can try engines to disable, or decks to soften crew, but if there is any doubt, Xeno, high level ship, just get in there! That first roll is so huge you can take some ships with one board and maybe one to three lost crew. What happens when both you and the enemy decide to board on the same turn? I know there are some Xeno who go in very close just to board, does the "first to board bonus" cancel out?

Good question, I would bet though whichever ship gets the winning roll in the case here gets the advantage. Maybe there is a tie result but I board or have been boarded lots and haven't seen it, one ship or the other always gets hit worse.

As far as I know it goes like this. In boarding, a standard happy crew member does/is a 1 If that crew member has access to a weapon from the hold he/she is worth 1.33 Mercenaries are worth 2 (and as noted if your crew is decimated down to 15 they will all still be mercs so thats handy) Mercenaries with access to weapons are worth 2.66 I love mercs

I've started alien hunting without boarding. So far, I've only had about a dozen encounters, each where I gun-bunnied the engines to smitherines and I got to loot the whopping 2 units of WF. I still can't catch a hive though - they must have ADHD or something

I don't know if I want to run into a violent Xeno with over 100 hull or keep on trying to catch a hive for tht pesky award.

Back when I played a lot more ST. I would generally use mercs until I got leveled up high enough and could use a big crew ship with that +20, +30% upgrade. It takes a long time to be able to handle that though.
If I remember, the secret to getting the hive awards is to keep your level low. I think I had a captain that I kept at level 2 and he eventually bagged 8 hives or something. For some reason level 2 vs. level 8 is more doable than level 20 vs level 80.
I think I have a PM about that somewheres, let me know if you're interested in being added to it.

I think I the general meaning. Enemy captains level off of your level, so at lvl 2 they'd be around 12 or 15, but at lvl 20 they get to lvl 240 (what I've been seeing around.
I guess skill wise they have very high stealth levels, that's why even if your ship has 3 times as many sails as your hull and theirs less than 1, they still manage to get away on the first turn.

Anyway, they don't play by our rules at all. He said something like catching a Hive is equivalent to catching a stone skipping across the water while you are treading water.
