Maybe you should give everybody a thing that lets them choose to unlock ONE award because at this point in time I can not get this one award and really just want it to be over. Maybe we should sell that for $.99 muhahahahaha Even if it's made as an optional choice(buy or unlock playing),i couldn't like it...=) But it's your business eh,not mine =)

I think the game is a perfect cost as it is. It made it cheap enough where I said "sure, why not" and bought the upgrade to Elite. If it had been $5 or $10 I probably wouldn't have. Now that I love the game so much I would, but at the time I wouldn't have.
As far as paying to unlock things or being able to buy upgrades, I think that would take away some of the challenge and fun of the game. It makes it too easy when you can just use real money to "cheat" your way through the game. Another idea would be to allow in-game credits to unlock things. (Example: 10 million credits unlocks "xyz ship".) That would give an incentive an reward for playing the game and same character for longer lengths of time.

Reading this entire thread I found one bit of knowledge that wasn't said, and its kind of important. Corey made this game for himself while learning to code, he didn't make it for the masses. That being said, I bought the game close to when it first appeared on the market and played on normal for a long long time. I didn't upgrade to elite for achievements or even bigger ships, I upgraded for a bigger map. It wasn't until about 5 months ago that I started playing on challenging. Its very kind of him to even acknowledge our input and a huge test of character to not bend the game to the will of the whiners. Even with all my unlocks I am still striving to learn to play on crazy let alone impossible. The achievements to me are milestones and rewards for trying new things. This is a great game that enjoy playing a lot. Î agree with whomever it was that classified this a rogue-like, and Mr abc123, if you are 49 you should remember those as I'm 27 and remember them. The beauty of this game is that its only as complex as you make it. Just about a month ago I started using caches and two weeks ago I made an explorer for the first time to utilize my new knowledge. If you don't like how Corey manages his game, there are other space rpgs to try, but we are more than happy to welcome you back when you get tired of easy mode gaming. This game is a gem, we are happy that Corey tends to his flock as much as he does. If you want easy mode in this game, try making a pirate to get your achievements. Its easier than getting them as a pirate than with a smuggler IMO. I don't know what it is, but when I try a new game I always come back to ST for my entertainment. I even bought elite versions of his other games and hardly play them. $6 is a small price for over a year of enjoyment. Just my 2 creds.

I will say first that I like the game, and it was my first market purchase I ever made. I think it's getting too hard. I play this to waste time at work without having to put much thought into it. Now that you have to play certain levels to unlock ships and stuff to me it is losing it's charm and becoming to in depth for a casual player. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with where the game has gone, and major thanks to the creator for all of his effort into making a great game. I would love to put the time into getting as good as the other posters here but that simply isn't an option. It would be nice if us basic players could get the goodies as well. Brad I've only played a couple of times since I made that post. I now play a bunch of Pirates and Traders because it's an easy time waster. After further thought, my beef is that at ports there are all of those options that I can't take advantage of, so the game gets clunky for basic players. How about finding a way to keep the stuff people aren't eligible for off the menu? The game changed drastically after I purchased it, and if it was like this before hand I probably wouldn't have bought it. Anyway, there's my post for the year.

Hey Bradoplata ... you actually have a spectacular suggestion that is hopefully straight forward to implement.
Cory - do you think you could create a setting in the options screen that says: "Hide locked upgrades". This setting is unchecked by default, but once selected, only unlocked and freely available upgrades will be on display.
I know that playing on the low levels of difficulty - Basic, Normal, once you get past the first 20 levels of experience (provided you put a little focus on pilot, stealth, tactics), you will be an unstoppable machine even flying around in a stock shuttle.
On higher difficulties, up to Demanding, you can actually survive without upgrades to your ships unless you do something particularly foolish (or if you encounter a couple of alien ships in a row).
On Crazy and above .. that's a whole different kettle of fish, and definitely not something you should just leap into anyway.
