Ok people this is such a good game but I have a few question.
1) why do my attacks keep missing when I am fighting big groups of enemys, I am getting sick of spending 5-8 turns to kill one of there troops cause I keep missing, I have the best equipment for each of my troops.
2)why so little gold when killing enemy's when the cost to buy things are so great?
3) damm useing so much sp potions is there a better way as wasting all my gold on potions, am I doing something wrong?
4) is there a way to find out what is best gear apart from looking at all in equipment? Anyway to sort items from best to worst?
thanks

@yaris - welcome to the forum and thanks for the post! I hope you'll stick around, there is a great crew of Heroes of Steel veterans here on the forum. 1. About the missing - what types of Empowered Attacks are you using? Which Buffs are you using? Which Curses? Heroes of Steel strategy is built around picking the right setup for your team so that all the characters work together. For example, you might use -Resistance Curses if you are adding +Fire Dmg Buffs, so that this Damage is maximized. If Vraes is using Crushing Blow (higher Damage and less accuracy) then you need to make sure that it paired with someone else using Curses that will bring down Parry and Dodge. This Combat Mechanics guide might help shed some light on it, and its great rules to know. If you share some of your build out and the different Empowered Attacks you are using, that would help everyone make some recommendations. startradersrpg.proboards.com/thread/6711/combat-mechanics?page=12. How far along are you in the game? You'll kill thousands of enemies throughout the game, so their gold rewards will add up to larger amounts. Be sure to sell whatever you are no longer using or types of weapons you can't use. 3. Which characters are eating up your SP potions so quickly? Depending on your group build, you might need to hustle back to a campsite every few fights or use some potions to make up the different. Is there a specific character or talent that is causing you issues? 4. Weapons, armor, and gear are sorted by type, and within the types they are sorted by their level. So, the ones that are farther down in the group are the highest level. I hope that helps.

1) Accuracy is key here, train the stats that add accuracy for the type attack a hero is using. Also train the appropriate weapon skills. Use empowered attacks that add accuracy. Use curses that reduce parry/dodge/armor/resistance. Use buffs that add accuracy. Best results will have entire party working together to bring down opponents. Example I've got Kjartan in my group. Before anyone makes attacks I use his Choking Ash on as many enemies as possible which reduces Armor (less armor means less damage soaked more damage applied to enemies) Parry and Dodge. Then if enemies are in range I have Fyona hit them with Holy Strickening to reduce their resistance and further lower dodge. If I had Kyera instead then she'd be using Ethereal Anguish to reduce their AP and lower their defenses. After the pure cursing actions are applied then I look at my cursing attacks. I have Selen with Pinning Shot which helps reduce AP and also reduces parry and dodge. As a bonus it gets an accuracy bonus so is more likely to hit, especially after the enemy has already been hit with at least Choking Ash. Basically you want to look at the heroes talents, see how they can work together and stack them to take out enemies. With strong cursing and some gear many empowered attacks will need very little skill to hit most targets. 2)Gold rewards for killing mobs are determined by the difficulty level your playing on. Higher difficulties mean you get less gold. Offset this by limiting your buying of potions as much as possible and by selling all the extra gear you collect but don't/can't use. Figure out what Armor or Weapons are most important for you to upgrade immediately and look to buy them first. Remember once you buy them to equip them then sell the old ones. 3)Don't be afraid to rest. When you see your SP bar is getting low after a battle head back to nearest way station/Inn. Resting is free and you'll be fully healed and recover all SP. Save the potions you collect for major battles and emergencies. Better to have a stockpile of potions you never touch than to be broke and suddenly find yourself in a major fight needing potions and not having any. Also while I talked in 1 above about using empowered attacks and talents to increase accuracy, you very often don't need to use an empowered attack after the initial effects are applied unless it's for extra damage or an AoE type that will likely hurt several enemies. Finally SP Drain gear is a big help especially for your main attackers. I start with one hero and start stacking SP Drain gear on them, usually my tank Vraes/Kincaid, isn't to hard to get 10-15% SP Drain which is enough to keep them going for quite some time. Then I'll try getting about the same percentage on Tamilin/Selen. My other two heroes tend to be lower priority for SP Drain gear because they are often casting curses or healing instead of attacking so won't benefit as much from SP Drain at least early game. 4) Afraid you just have to look at whats available. For weapons and armor you can select one of your heroes in shops and it will show what they currently have equiped and only the types from shop they can equip which helps reduce scrolling a bit. Hope this helped and welcome to the forums.

Welcome!
I will try to answer each of your questions to the best my (awesome) abilities.
"1) why do my attacks keep missing when I am fighting big groups of enemys, I am getting sick of spending 5-8 turns to kill one of there troops cause I keep missing, I have the best equipment for each of my troops."
This is not easy and clearcut to explain, each hero depending on the weapons you use needs different attributes and or skill to make sure their to hit chance becomes more reliable. I shall provide a few examples;
(1) Kincaid uses light blades and dexterity and blades will make him hit better. (2) Kjartan when using attack spells needs knowledge and sorcery to make him better.
Depending on your hero and depending on their weapon this might be different, so a possible answer to your question could be that maybe you have stacked your points into the wrong things and therefore you are missing more then average.
The other things that can be of importance are if the enemy you are hitting is "special", in episode 1 a lot of the ratkin you will fight will die in a few blows but once you encounter shamans and deathkin you will find that they have better stats then the average monster. On the same level but not entirely some enemies are easier to hit then others, if the enemy appears armored or has a shield you can bet that he will more difficult to hit then a "naked" volpa. (beast type monster)
Last but not least, this game requires that you as the operator behind the steering wheel or the puppet master create a good synergy with your 4 chosen heroes. An aspect of this is to make sure that you curses/debuffs to make your enemies easier to hit. I shall provide another example;
(1) If we look at Kjartan and more specifically at his Choking Ash ability you will see that it lowers the enemy armor, parry and dodge. This makes the enemy easier to hit and once you do you'll also deal more damage. This makes Choking Ash (CA) a very good ability. However to see reliable result it might be wise to invest heavily in this talent.
"2)why so little gold when killing enemy's when the cost to buy things are so great? "
The amount of gold you gain from killing enemies should be more then enough to get you through the whole game, there are only a few items that are worth buying from the shops and if you use a lot of spirit potions then I am afraid that you're doing something wrong. Not that this will help you but at the end of my 1st playthrough on easy mode I still have nearly 750.000 gold unspend and I have never bought a healing or spirit potion. So to answer your question, the amount of gold gained (especially on lower difficulties) is more then enough to get you what you need or don't need.
3) damm useing so much sp potions is there a better way as wasting all my gold on potions, am I doing something wrong?
Yes, there is no nice way to tell you this, you're doing something wrong. It is very important to make sure that your heroes can pay the spirit cost of their abilities without draining you. Later in the game you will find %sp drain gear that get's you SP points back. However if your Vraes is a low level and you decided to give him ferocity rank 2 then you can bet that there is no way to keep the spirit cost up. As a solution I suggest that you check the abilities that you have chosen and see if you can find which abilities are draining you. In conclusion to this question I can help you if you post which characters you are using or you can try and figure out which abilities drain you and if a replacement can be used.
4) is there a way to find out what is best gear apart from looking at all in equipment? Anyway to sort items from best to worst?
Knowledge is the key, there is only a handfull of items (less then 5 I would say) that would good on EVERY character regardless of your build w/e. So this means that it will depend on the manner in which you build your heroes/team. If you make a tanking hero, giving him items with dodge+parry are very good. If you have a hero that is a damage dealer then gear that adds a lot of +dmg and/or accuracy will be good or if the character has good crit % then crit % will be great. As you can see there are a lot of options and the outcome will be determined by your own choises and as you play you will learn and find out some things are just horrible and other things are great. I think items are assorted on value however this DOES not mean that they are better, it all depends on your builds.
If you have any more questions or if you would like advice or help with your heroes feel free to ask of make a post of your team and I will be happy to help you.
With kind regards,
Rashar.

Welcome back and thank you for taking the time to write down some details.
Straight of the bat I can see what will cause you problems, but before I will delve deeper into that I have some questions for you, keep in mind if you can't answer these or find it bothersome then there is no need, it will just help me get a better idea of what is going on in your group.
1: what difficulty do you play on? 2: which 4 heroes have you chosen? 3: What is the lowest level among the heroes you have? 4: Can you provide a list of talents that you have chosen for each hero? (this one will take some time but I guarantee you this will bring big results for you!)
So at this point since I am in the dark about some things I have to make some assumptions, however with just Kjartan and Vraes I am pretty sure we can do very awesome things and I hope I can explain a few things that make you go: "oooooh.... or Ah!" If anything is unclear during my ramblings feel free to ask again and again untill you are satisfied with the answer I have given.
NOTE: I am unable to provide short posts/answers so this is the time to grab a drink and some food and relax while reading the "scriptures of a black dragon". NOTE2: I am a min/max gamer I shall explain my answers, I'm okay with you having different opinions or disagreeing with me. What I bring you and tell you is my perspective/opinion sometimes backed up my math and sometimes backed up by my stubborness.
Before diving into the problem what I do before I play a game is ask myself two questions;
(1) How do I win? (2) How do I not lose?
If you answer these questions for yourself you should be able to get useful information based of that, from there on you should be able to have ideas to build and test to see if your theories are/were correct. In this case "How do I win?" well... by defeating all the enemies. "How do I not lose" By making sure that your heroes are alive. Right from the get go my instincts told me, damage is the way to go to make sure eveything dies as fast as possible. Dead things can not hit back. And the other thing I did was to make sure that the more squishy heroes had either hitpoints or gear to survive or dodge an attack.
Before making a team of heroes it is important to make sure each hero has it's own role and you have a "cookiecutter" strategy in how you go to battle. Each team of heroes needs a tank that can avoid melee and ranged physical attacks. This is your character that will either draw archer fire/ranged fire or he will attempt to kill them asap. Every team of heroes needs an offtank, this character needs to make sure that he or she is able to avoid any melee attacks. This means that basicly 1:20 attacks can hit him/her. You need this because there are times you will be attacked from 2 sides or maybe you triggered 2 battles at once or strategy wise it means that your true tank can just run through the opponent dealing with ranged/summoners while your other tank is keeping the melee attackers occupied. In this game melee ai will 99/100 times go for the closest character, after episode 2 it is the ranged that has their ai changed from clostes to within range. Therefore ranged attackers will the real threats to your heroes. So we need a tank, an offtank and after that we need to make sure we have curse/buff strategy. Some enemies are a pain to hit and you want to lower their dodge and/or parry with a curse. Maybe you want to increase you own damage with a buff. The choises you make have to be solid within your team and have to go by the rule how many of the heroes will (f)actually benefit from this.
Now without any further ramblings or derailings I will hammer some on your heroes and choises, remember this is not meant to be insulting or as personal abuse it is merely my advice and I know I can come on a little strong because I miss something called political correctness.
Vraes
Looking at your Vraes I see a few big problems and I can not even see his talent yet. First thing is that you need to focus on your atributes and/skills yours are all over the place. Second thing is that your Vraes is using a 4ap 2 handed weapon.
(1) Focus your points! You have picked Vraes with a Str weapon (spears) this means he requires strength to be able to hit his enemies and polearms skill. Your priority with his attributes should be Strenght to 16 because every point of strenght gives +1dice to hit. You made his polearm skill 16 and that is a very good choise if you use spears. However you have also spend points in the hammer skill, those will be rubbish and useless when you're holding a spear. Those points would be better spend in leadership or lore (depending on which buffs you are using.) After Str has reached 16 you will have to choose if what you want to go for next, this can be dexterity to make sure less attacks hit you, or constitution to absorb the attacks that do hit you.
(2) Now this is something that made me rather infamous but it is my (and also Einsteins) belief that any two handed weapon with an ap cost of 3 or more that is currently in this game is pure garbage. In some way this also applies to 1 handed weapons that cost 3 ap to attack but you can still wield a shield with them so that is what keeps them from being pure garbage but just very bad. I am not telling you to change this, it is your game, your choises, your parteh! However using a 1 handed 2ap spear will leave you with a better balanced Vraes that will do more damage, will be able to use a shiled, therefore will be able to use one of his top 3 talents. The thing with your spear is that you can only have 1 attack per round. As we figured out earlier taking out the enemies as fast as we can is how we win, so I don't think 1 attack per round is going to help with that much. Also the other thing is that we can lose by having dead heroes in order to prevent that we can use a shield that will give us +parry and some extra bonuses. And it opens up Vraes's Phalanx Shield (PS) talent which is imo one of his top 3 talents. With a 2 ap spear we can have upto 3 attacks, missing will be less painful, if we need to move 4 squares we can do so and still have 1 attack left instead of having 0 attacks. And this is just the versatily aspect, there is also a math aspect to it but I will not bother you with that.
Thinking in solutions!
So in order to have a cool working buttkicking Vraes that can hold it's own, yet needs to rely on his team mates I suggest the following. Since I can not see your talents and you're using a 2 handed weapon I can only assume that you have not chosen Phalanx Shield. With this in mind the only thing I can tell you is that you need a respec for Vraes. My advice is based on what you shown me and it will not reflect my own personal preference. You have shown me a Vraes with a spear so I will give you Vraes with a hint of Leonidas (300, THIS IS SPARTA!)
Strenght to 16, this gives you +16 dice to hit. Constitution to 16, this gives you hitpoints and toughness (armor) so attacks that do hit will do less damage and you will be able to take a hit. NOTE: even with a strenght Vraes it can be beneficial to increase dexterity to 16 to make sure less attacks hit him, but this is a very slow process and I do not recommend it unless you have chosen a dexterity build Vraes as a base.)
spears 16 (make sure it is 18 @ level 30 and 20 @ level 40, this might require a very small amount of planning by just saving some skill points before these levels.) Leadership 12+~is (this will give you extra turns of Phalanx shield and Berserk rage) Lore xx (only start dumping points into lore after your burst of speed starts hitting that +2 movepoint mark and that will be lategame)
Talents in accordance of PRIORITY:
Burst of speed rank 1 Phalanx shield rank 1 upto 10 Berserk rage rank 1 upto 10 ferocity rank 1 DEPENDING on your amount of %sp drain you will then sink points into ferocity for higher dmg or burst of speed +mp.
This Vraes build focuses on being a tank in episode 1, then throughout episode 2 he will become this tanking damage dealing monster, and when ferocity and burst of speed develop he will be an unstoppable force. The exra movement make it so that he can reach arecher, javelin throwers, ranged casters in the 1st round and his dmg and critical hits will make it so that he also takes them out. He will be parry capped and with a str build you will see probably see like 1:4 ranged attacks still hit you.
What type of gear is good for him? Statpriority
dodge (universal stat for evading attacks) parry (not as good as dodge but, helps avoiding melee attacks and he NEEDS to be parry capped) +ms (only if +2 or compared with high dodge, and only when his total +mp is less then 4) %sp drain (only if you already have atleast 1 rank of ferocity, and only if the item offers other priority stats.) % crit (ony if the % is very high 6%+ or if their are other stats on that are high priority) +dmg (only if the value is 24 or higher and only when combined with other (high) priority stats.)

Dayum, even I need to take a break from my own posts...
Ok, the second hero you posted is:
Kjartan
I can see that there is something that can be better, however since Kjartan relies mostly on his talents it's hard for me to analize with the amount of information I have so I will assume you play on easy or normal difficulty and will go from here.
Just looking at this my first question would be, why invest in willpower? It increases his magical defence and his curse resistance, but Kjartan should in theory never be in range of anything enemy related. So higher resistance where he takes less damage from spell attacks should not be that great, infact why not invest those in constitution if he does take a physical ranged hit or a melee attack he has some hitpoints and might survive the attack(s).
Now to get a better understanding of Kjartan I believe he can only be build in one specific way and I dont mean his talents because I believe there is a little bit leeway there. What I mean is that Kjartan should allways bring Choking Ash 10, Firestorm 5 regardless of what you want to do with him and thus he will need to be able to hit things otherwise Firestorm is going to lackluster and missing with it is HUGEly annoying. The reason why I say this is because Choking Ash is a curse that eventually lets you target upto 3x3 and you apply -armor - parry -doge, it helps your party hit with melee and/or ranged attacks and it lets them deal a bit more damage. Later in the game there will be times where there are a lot of enemies that are clumped up and Kjartan doing some pyrotechnics will be amusing, pleasing and painful. Eventually you'll be able to hit upto 20 targets although it is unlikely that this scenario will happen often however scenarios where you hit 10+ mobs will happen a lot in episode 4 and in episode 3 there are plenty of time where you should be able to hit 4-5+ and therefore it makes it a viable option. I think my record is hitting 17 targets and dealing 3,5k damage for 4 ap not that it matters though, but it is an indication that the attack can be very powerful in making sure enemies are damaged and your damage dealers can perform cleanup duty.
My advice for you with your kjartan is as follows: (keep in mind this is for easy/normal difficulty)
Intelligence 16, he needs the spirit pointsm he will be cursing non stop and if he is without spirit points he will still be cursing but then in another language. Get constitution and knowledge upto the same level and then alternate between knowledge and constitution. He needs constitution because you are human, errors happen and when Kjartan does take a hit he will take the FULL FORCE and needs hitpoints. In order to make sure his firestorm doesnt become a shitstorm he needs to hit and this you want knowledge as it increases the to hit with +1dice/knowledge.
Conjuration upto 9 asap, conjuration 9 is required to target upto 9 enemies with Choking Ash (3x3) Sorcery to 16, 18, 20 Sorecery gives extra to hit dice so it makes your firestorm hit. Conjuration upto 20 gives extra rounds on Choking Ash and other buffs/debuffs you will be applying.
Talents in order of priority:
Choking Ash 1 upto 10 Firestorm rank 1 (as soon as it becomes available) Burning Blades 1 upto 10 Firestorm rank 2 upto 5 Whatever you want however for easy/normal difficulty I suggest: Firebolt rank 1 utpo 10 for harder difficulties I suggest Meteoric shockwave rank 1 upto 10.
Kjartan even though he is a wizard will never be the dps wizard (Vincent the alternative character is good at that), the strength of Kjartan is in the support he provides to your group with Choking Ash (things are easier to hit), Burning Blades (you deal extra fire dmg and have extra critical hit) and Firestorm (will be able to deal average damage to a lot of enemies and thus damage dealers have an easier time with clean up duty). With kjartan you basicly will be using Choking Ash on everything, however keep in mind that some enemies have low armor and are easy to hit (Volpa for example) and can easily be killed without Choking Ash.
The hottest (pun intended) ability Kjartan brings to the table is burning blades, it will let your heroes deal additional damage as fire damage (this damage will also get multiplied if you score critical hits) and it gives upto 6% crit. Now your Vraes will love the extra critical hit and fire damage since he will reliable score 1 critical hit per round. Kjartan will love having the extra fire damage as it makes his Firestorm more deadly without increasing actual firestorm ranks. Kyera as tank can benefit a bit from burning blades but in general I find her the worst character out of all 8 characters even though she one of the best talents in the game. If you have fyona then she will love the +fire dmg. And for both Tamilin and Selen the added fire damage and % crit will be amazing.
Gearwise Kjartan is best off with 1-2 items that give a high amount of +max hp and max sp (this to make sure he will not run out of sp fast and because adding dodge and parry to Kjartan is useless he is better of with max hitpoints in order to survive 1-2 hits) Other items should focus on a combination of + (ranged) accuracy and + (fire) damage however the numbers need to reasonable otherwise you're better of just handing him more +sp/hp gear. His HIGHEST priority is +ms, he needs MOVEMENT SPEED and thus you want items that synergize with his stats and also give +ms. If you can not find those then sadly you must give him the +2 ms or the +2ms +2 dodge boots. He needs to be able to move and then curse/attack, or move, curse and then walk back, or with a total of 7ap and 2mp you can just move 9 squares and you can be atleast 90% sure that nothing will attack him. Making sure your whole group has atleast +2mp is a very good and viable tactic and makes it so that you can perform guerrillia tactics and it also helps ensure you that out of ranged mobs can be hit without taking away precious AP.
I hope this helped, enjoy the game the way you want it!
Happy easter and kind regards,
Rashar.

@yaris - it would help if you could post the main Talents each Hero is using. How is Vraes attacking? What is Kjartan doing with most of his AP?

That will give you the best build and best accuracy / defense. A really good way to think of spending Talent points is to focus on how you spend your AP. You want to pool the Talent points into where you spend your 7 AP every turn. With Kjartan, you've got big points invested in Firestorm, Firebolt and Immolation. It is impossible for you to use these every turn, so you've got more attack talents than you need. Same with Vraes and Crushing Blow + Ferocity. If you're taking Ferocity that high, you'll either need SP Drain % or another strategy like Kyera using Sacrifice or you will drink every potion in the Underdeep An easy change to Vraes' talent layout would be to take your 10 pts from Crushing Blow or 7 from Ferocity and put them into Natural Mastery -- it would give you a huge boost to Accuracy and Defense. I think the best lesson I can share is about focusing your Talent pt spend around how you use your AP. If you've put Talent points into Talents you aren't using anymore, look to hunt down enough Moonstone Crystals to do a Respec and adjust your build to put all the Talent pts into Talents you use every single turn or really good Buffs that you get with every single Auto Buff.

@yaris Part of your problem is talents being too scattered without each hero giving much support to the others. Also if investing heavy in high level talents then adding intelligence for the extra SP can really help as can gear giving bonus SP and SP Drain. Your Vraes talents look ok, not what I'd use but they aren't bad either. However he's going to need Intelligence, Gear and likely Kyera with Sacrifice to keep using them. Sorry but your Kjartan is a mess. Choking Ash is probably his very best talent and one of the best in the game. Ignoring it is hurting your entire party in terms of being able to hit targets and deal damage to them. Immolation and Warding Words are just a waste of Talent points especially since you've invested heavily in both Firebolt and Firestorm.
Kyera could also use tightening up on her talents. Since you've not taken Vraes Stone skin all the way to 10 then Myshana's Tears at 10 is mostly wasted, especially with Purifying Breeze at 5. Personally I'd choose one or the other, probably Purifying Breeze in this case as my heal and ignore the other completely. Again you've totally ignored Ethereal Anguish which is arguably one of the very best talents in game. It reduces AP which means enemies will get far fewer attacks and also lowers their accuracy further reducing their ability to harm your party and dodge making them easier to hit.
On Tamilin you've placed a bunch of unneeded points on her Precision Pick, 1 will open any lock so the other 4 can go elsewhere. While Aimed Shot wouldn't be my second pick for talent with Ranged Onslaught it's not bad and does give a fairly cheap yet accurate attack SP wise. Think that taking those extra points in Precision Pick and Disarming Touch and placing them in Deadly Intuition would benefit her greatly as it would raise her accuracy and increase odds of her scoring criticals.

@yaris - Stone Skin is a clutch talent. You buff with it every time you Auto-Buff and you get a ton of armor and HP out of it. I think our commentary is about "duplicate" talents that you have. Your Vraes has 2 major attack Talents that are both "high damage and moderate accuracy", that is Ferocity and Crushing Blow. This means a lot of Talent pts that could have been spent on other Buffs are dedicated to attack Talents you can't possibly be using consistently. Same with Kjartan -- in a single turn, it is impossible to cast Firestorm + Immolation + Firebolt. Which one are you really using a lot? Every turn? Consider Respec'ing to remove the others. Those points would be well spent in Burning Blades or Pureflame Shield.
