My personal strategy for combat-based captains is a fast/quick ship (Jango Class is an excellent candidate for low/medium levels, switch to one of the high-end ships afterwards), max out pilot+tactics with enough stealth to avoid getting hit, then always move in to close range and spam Engines. Pilot allows you to move in quickly and avoid torp damage, and also to retreat and escape if the enemy is too high-level. Tactics is for hitting engines to disable the enemy ship. Stealth is to minimize damage to your own ship. If balanced correctly, you can pretty much make 100% profit from looting ships, and only have to spend it on fuel and the occasional repair. Don't need stealth. Current captain on Insane level 44 has stealth 1 and has only been hit by a torpedo once in entire career. Pilot 200% level, tactics 100% level. Note I also don't have a pilot officer and most of my ships don't have upgrades to help in combat other than extra armor/hull.

Hmm. I must be misunderstanding how combat mechanics work, then. Which skill improves evasion, if not stealth? Pilot?

Don't get me wrong Stealth can be a big help in evading torps and long range maneuvering. However because of it's cost on character leveling and the fact that it starts reducing the number of encounters you get as it is leveled up, a combat oriented captain that's looking to fight a lot and get potential loot/salvage is better off keeping it very low. In the formula used to determine your captains level each point of stealth counts double so I can either add 2 points to pilot or 1 point to stealth. Personally have found keeping pilot at 200% level much more effective as it does more to help at all ranges than stealth at 100% with a low pilot.

It depends on if your Combat oriented Captain is looking to decide what fights to take, vs. having them rolled by the game.
