As much as I am into RPGs, I have only recently started playing D&D with my friends. The main reason was that A) I didn't know much about it at all, and B) I didn't have anyone who was interested in it to introduce me to it. Last year was when my friends and I organized a campaign group, as one of my friend's parents had a bunch of 3.5e books. We finished our first campaign, where my Cleric of Pelor sacrificed himself to save the party from being utterly destroyed by a powerful demon. The people of the kingdom loved him because he always gave away gold to the poor and would spend the nights that the party was in town healing the sick and injured.
Now I'm DMing a campaign for my friends.

Table top role playing is something Andrew and I both really enjoy. It is such a wonderful way to explore stories.
That said, it can be really awful with the wrong players or GM. I think that is often what separates people who love it from people who don't.
It is no doubt a soft skill, but there are people who are good at it and people who are not.

I agree that the GM really sets the tone for a game. Other players contribute as well. You've got to have the right people to have fun with it.
The majority of what makes a good GM are soft skill. Then again, soft skills like leadership, navigating office politics, negotiating contracts/agreements make the world go 'round.

Those choose your adventure books were pretty awesome weren't they? My fav was this one where you are thrown overboard and saved by merfolk to begin an underseas adventure. Craky if I remember the name of it. Internet generation has it easy.
That said, my first rpg that i recall was called Landing Party. Pretty basic, but you could have crews as diverse as Bugs Bunny, Matt Dillon, Cap. Kirk, and John Wayne. It was a no graphics deal. Anyone else play this?
After atari, and arcade machines, and dungeon crawlers on pc, the rpg that got me hooked was probably Legend of Zelda. (Action adventure i know) The moment when I was destined to love the genre was when I read a Nintendo Power article about Secret of Mana. (Action adventure i know)
I know I'm forgetting a lot. All these substances. Biggest regret? Never beating FF4, maybe.
P.s. I like FF6 a lot. Thank you Japan. Love those guys and gals.

I seem to recall enjoying KOTOR until I got stuck somewhere and could NOT figure out how to get out. If you ever need help on KOTOR just tell me I have every area memorized pretty well

You can get all the old Final Fantasy games as ports for PS3 (probably PS4 as well but not sure.) There are still active game guide sites for FF4 Tactics with a ton of information about playing the game and ways to grind your party to near God hood. I've got it on my PS3 and every so often will lose entire days or even weeks to it as I try something new or different. Biggest problem I have is not stopping the incessant grinding to get on with actually completing the game lol. Oh and Calculate has got to be one of the most broken skills/talents/powers ever included in a game which is saying something as FF4 has several other skills that are in the running as far as being broken balance wise.

Good ol' tactics. I think FF tactics was a goodbye letter to a generation.
Now we get signpost rpgs. Though I am generalizing, since I don't play new games really. Excepting android games.

GURPS, ADnD, Shadowrun, White Wolf, Cyberpunk, etc. I can remember an old Atari 800 as a young kid playing joust and moon patrol from the floppy disks then the Commodore 64/128 then onto the consoles starting with the 8 bit Nintendo (original). Wow, I'm a big geek.

Not enough people have experienced the joy of GURPS! Lol for some reason I was never a huge fan of GURPS. How about Rolemaster? Rifts/Palladium?

I've never tried them. Most of my experience with pen and paper was GURPS and a smattering of DnD. I live in a small town, so not many people to group with.

Rifts was ok. The mainstays with me were Shadowrun, ADnD, and White Wolf games (typically Vampire or Mage).
