For the missing aspects that people may want you could spin conjuration to cause fireballs to hutle at enemies because you conjure it out of nowhere(even though most people would expect it from sorcery),you could combine it with str for forging because you conjure a better weapon or improvements. You could spin sorcery and combine it with will for faith type abilities, combine it with int for more traditional conceptions of what magic should be. Gotta realize when someone is making a game they will want some their worlds stuff to stand out at as their own and not just going along the lines of what everybody is used to, because that's one of the ways you can make a game truly your own. Good call on that, mixing skills for abilities/spell. Reminds of how Mage: The Ascension works, but instead of Elements, we use skills. Since we already have a tradition of having 2-3 skills tagged to an attribute, I don't see why we should stop now. It's just that intuitive. Example: STR Power Forging DEX Speed Nimbleness CON Health Immunity WIL Faith Resistance INT Magic Intuition CHA Social Leadership Nimbleness+Power=Ranged Magic+Intuition=Sorcery Magic+Faith=Conjuration Power+Speed=Melee Speed+Intuition=Dodge Speed+Health=Running Nimble+Speed=Lockpicking Nimble+Intuition=Trapping Nimble+Social=Pickpocketing Forging+Intuition=Weaponsmith Forging+Power=Armorer Forging+Nimble=Fletcher Resistance+Intuition=Alchemy Health+Resistance=Herbalism Intuition+Faith=Divining Faith+Resistance=Religion Health+Intuition=First Aid Health+Power=Survival And so on.

We could but I can only include skills that I can come up with an equal number of operations for -- I hate when one skill is great and another one sucks =)

Foraging is a good skill. Let's us get stuff from doodads like bushes, rocks, trees ans stuff. Resistance too. Training in ingesting poisonous stuff in small doses over time let's us build up some immunity against venomous creatures. Enchanting is very useful too. Works like bless on weapons and also recharges wands. Edit: Oh, and Negotiation. Because MONEY talks! ;D

There won't be a lot of crafting in this game -- it isn't SoS proper just an experimental project for me. probably won't be released.
I like resistance and I like Foraging/Searching
Ranged Melee
Toughness Resistance
Sorcery Conjuring
Lockpick Traps
Dodge Athletics
Negotiation Scholar
Spot Search
[EDIT: Removed smith, on second thought the characters are heros not workers they are too busy being heroic.]

Okay, if we are talking about heroic heroes stuff, I could only think up of the following stuff that they do well:
Swimming (Not sure if you will use water tiles as permanent natural barriers) Climbing (Same as above but using mountain/wall tiles) Mapmaking (If Automapping is left out on purpose) Leadership (Lets you lead a party with more and/or stonger members than usual) First Aid (Ability to stop bleeding wounds, cure poison and even remove diseases at higher levels) Faith (Turn Undead, Lay on Hands and other holy stuff)

Toughness -- Resistance to Physical Damage / Poison Resistance -- Resistance to Magical Damage / Drain
Sorcery -- Use of Spells Conjuring -- Creation / Destruction of Spirits
Lockpick -- Open Locked Doors, Chests, Panels Traps -- Detect / Disarm Traps
Dodge -- Avoid Damage / Avoid Traps Athletics -- Determine Movement Dice
Negotiation -- [Possible Fail]: Reduce Prices in Stores? Scholar -- View Detailed Bestiery Info (HP/Attack/Defense, Monster Resistances, Toughness, % of Treasure, etc)
Spot -- Line of Sight / Detect Ability Search -- Find Items in Rooms w/o Chests
