Hello there, new member here. I signed up just to post a boast discussion about my current captain, only to discover that there has been a community challenge for indy captains 2 years before I found this game.
My current captain, Глупок Границев (the name is a dumb pun - Foolish Bo(a)rder), comes from a long line of failed captains playing on Hard difficulty: either they died early because they sucked, or they made it to mid-game only to get mercilessly slaughtered by Aliens. Included in their number are various Explorers, Pirates, Bounty Hunters, etc.. This captain, however, made it big, if you can call it that... He started off as a De Valtos bounty hunter, and at first he did somewhat well, having earned the Quick Contracts I/II awards. However, he sucked at keeping track of trade embargoes, spy wars, and the like, and after getting burned once too often by fickle faction politics, his brain snapped and he went on a bloody rampage across the galaxy, pillaging, looting, and killing every ship he encountered. Well, at first he kept a respectful distance from the Cadar... but after having earned Dark Nemesis, Doom Reaper I, II, III, and Blackheart, as well as Ultra/Elite Privateer, he decided to go all out and shoot down every ship he met. Thus, he earned the badge of Independent Captain (-121 rep with all Factions) while also earning Alien Killer I/II on the side. For a number of years he enjoyed taking up contracts just for the fun of it, and then voiding them or just ignoring whichever he didn't feel like doing, and if anybody objected he'd just blast them out of the skies. Sometimes he just blasted them out of the skies anyway, just because he can.
This, of course, is no big achievement, relatively speaking. After all, once a captain has acquired a sufficiently good ship with sufficiently strong Tactics/Warrior skills he can get by quite easily doing whatever he wants. What's most remarkable about this captain, though, is that after he earned the badge of Independent Captain, something in his brain flipped again, and his senses returned to him, and he decided to reverse his crimes against humanity. Taking advantage of Spy Wars and other faction politics, he earned his reputation back with each Faction, one by one. Some of the factions, like Thulun, were below -320, but after some time he earned the Hero of the Stars award (+151 rep with all Factions). He was a little disappointed that this monumental achievement did not earn him a special award! (Seriously, I think earning Independent Captain and Hero of the Stars, in that order, deserves an award! ) Of course, independent captains, especially pirates, still get mercilessly blown out of the sky by him, and then enslaved/looted if their ship still exists afterwards.
Anyway, that aside... I noticed that the game tends to give you only Spice Hall contracts once your rep is in the deep red. Which makes sense, 'cos otherwise it would be impossible to fulfill. But I did get a few contracts that couldn't be completed because my Captain was banned. :-P Not that this mattered to the Captain; during his "flip out" he would just void the contract and then go shoot down the faction that gave him the bad contract in a fit of rage.
