Not trying to open any cans of worms here, but sounding out a thought I had writing fanfiction for ST:
Are slaves a thing in ST? You can enslave other crew in ST, but a post from Cory some time ago claims that Shaking (and assumably Templars) don't approve of slaves. Generally the Templars are the ultimate authority, but if so why can you enslave and not have Templars chase you down? Is it something the Templars turn a blind eye to for the Houses and Clans to prosper? Would slavery be a common thing or more of a black-market good? Any comments, guys? 😉

The Guild held the Star Traders in virtual slavery for centuries. The Guild controlled the colonies by controlling all space transport. The Founding, the Factions and the Star Traders were created to preserve freedom.
There will always be humans that take advantage of other humans and hold them under their power as slaves. The Templars, the Star Traders and the Factions are all strongly (violently?) opposed to slavery.

Generally the Templars are the ultimate authority, but if so why can you enslave and not have Templars chase you down?... I assume "Shalun" was autocorrected to "Shaking". Anyway, one of the rumors mentions slaves, so it seems slaves are definitely a thing. "There's been a Syndicate sponsored operation on [NAME] and deadly rogue traders have cleared out everything of value. Anyway, I only mentioned it cuz your Crew-dog was chatting up the wait- slave about his plan to head over that way, right? It was something that sounded a lot like [NAME]!

Nope. No comment. I didn't see a thing. Pay no attention to the sheep behind the curtain. We are so gone, we were not even here.

I thought the enslave option was more a nod to the rich history of impressing people into naval service. Slavery of a kind, but not pure exploitation. A slave on a space ship could be a dangerous thing.

A slave on a space ship could be a dangerous thing. It absolutely is. They join your crew. There is no separate "slave" position on a Star Traders crew. As Cory Trese mentioned, Star Traders are rigidly opposed to slavery.
