Contracts, contracts, contracts... What factors affect what type of contract we get? How do we, as players, maximize our chances of getting a certain type of contract? My research on this: - "The Spice Hall distributes Delivery, Passenger, and Capture Missions."
- "The palace distributes different types of missions based on Rank and Edict" (edict?)
- "The military base distributes different types of missions based on Rank and Conflict"
- Buying a death permit from a Faction makes that faction more likely to assign kill missions (?)
- Steel Song is more likely to contract out assassination contracts
- Conflicts change the likelihood of getting a certain contract (?)
My questions: - Does reputation affect what type of contracts we get, or just the payment we receive?
- How does rank affect what type of contracts we get?
- Are military bases more likely to assign one type of contract than palaces?
I would really appreciate your help with this. Thanks!

The military base draws from the same contract pool as the palace.

Reputation only affects the payment and maybe the amount of available contracts. It doesn't affect the types of contracts you receive. Rank affects only the payment, but not as much as reputation.

The military base draws from the same contract pool as the palace. But generates missions at a different probability weighting. Military Base prefers to give out Blockade and Spy missions.

And also. I keep getting mission for independents and when I complete them I get stripped ranks so I can't take any mission against independents for less than 75k cuz I have to buy back my rank level for 30k. Anything less than 75k makes it a waste of time cuz I'll probably get stripped a rank for doing the mission. Not always but most of the time.

Yeah, at high levels working against Indies is a double edged sword. Depends on how many ranks you hold.

At the moment I'm rank 14 with all 6 so doing stuff against independents is good and bad. Heh. Must have been around lev 13-14 that I noticed I lost a lot of ranks.

Haha Today contracts were really against me. As I bought the new device, I have to unlock all these achievements again. Well, I always unlock the Spy one (Expert contractor - 24 successful contracts) first. But this time I decided to do it all in one go with rank promotions etc, so I twisted my build for a long term development. Well, first time in a long while I died on Crazy difficulty. I decided to go for my normal tactics.. . Just buy all edicts... Well, it went well at the beginning. I bought them in all syndicates and Javat. But then Boom! The era of Assassination contracts came in! Assassination everywhere, even in spice halls... And everyone offered them. Before I realized that, I was already at 7 declined contract, meaning that I had only one free declination... So I just began fighting. In an inappropriate ship (vae victus) and badly developed captain I fought my way through assassination contracts. Well, I somehow managed to get that one successfully.. . And soon I died against a pirate ramming me to death, because I had no torps and very low pilot (ok, I committed suicide, because that was just too slow) But trust me... That feeling of achievement when I unlocked the Contractor award on Crazy under such messed up conditions was the best feeling I have had in a long while.. which is kind of sad though. I should get a life PS I noticed that the assassination contracts are really messy :# I get only +3 rep with the contractor, but -12 rep and edicts loss with the target...

Hah, I'm doing the same thing and had just the same experience with assassination contacts come up. I took a different path though. Ran some shortages and spied until I had enough cash for a Jango class. I was able to do assassinations pretty well with it. I won't get the unlocks for keeping the starting ship, alors.

Ran some shortages and spied until I had enough cash for a Jango class. I was able to do assassinations pretty well with it. I won't get the unlocks for keeping the starting ship, alors. I had troubles with that as well, because there were no shortages around me and I had too low reputation to spy (managed to raise the reputation with Javat to 32 due to spying on Rychart, but then Javat had a trade embargo and solar war with Cadar and after one round of spying my reputation with Rychart came from - 14 to -1, after buying a pardon and selling 19 records it was on +4, so continuing with Rychart was impossible. So I went back to doing contracts for SS (who again tried to kill me by all these faction targeted assassination contracts btw) and on my way to Steel Prima I encountered an independent pirate. I could just surrender, but since it was already after 78 AE, I decided to fight a battle I couldn't win and got rammed to death. However, I took full advantage of captain designer and ship designer. Now I have a fully fledged torp build and a fast medium ship that is still keeping decent armor. However, due to 21 engines the fuel consumption is quite huge with 1 pilot.

I just love the way that politics makes the game in ST. Sometimes I think the game is pretty much over by the time I get to level 10 and have a second ship. The really challenging part is getting started. After that the only thing left is to go alien hunting...
In my game, after my getting my expert contractor award Javat got into a 3-way spy war. Talk about gravy, by the time that was over I had +200 rep in 4 factions and gained about 10 levels.

What was your condition for victory there? You already had good baseline rep with Javat and could spy?
What did you do to generate net positive Rank?
Asking for a friend.

Since I last played it seems like nothing has changed in regards to using the Double Agent Spy strategy. I was just getting started and trying to build rep all around, so I was at the point where I could get death warrants with all the factions I needed. Then I just stayed over Javat Prime surveilling. In the beginning my rep with Javat was only about 20 so when I ran that down to around 0 I would go to the urban zone, re-buy my Javat death warrant if necessary and sell them all of my records I just made spying on them. That would get my positive rep back up with them. Load up on fuel, rinse, repeat. It's a net gain all around and when there's three factions in a Spy War with Javat you get massive xp to boot. There's no contracts and you don't even have to move your ship, except to land. The only danger is Javat sending military and BHs up against you, but as long as you can always escape them, there should be no problem as long as you have money in the bank to re-buy your death warrant and keep the crew spiced up (they get disgruntled from too much escaping). To get my initial rep up. I relied on some contracts and then selling to shortages to get cash, which I used to buy and sell records to build rep all around. Once you've got trade permits with everyone and at least 1 military rank you're pretty much free to do as you please anywhere. Here's my original post on Double Agent Work: startradersrpg.proboards.com/thread/3323/loads-rep-double-agent

ST2 features much more interesting "mission" sources. I think you'll like it

contributor is my second me, except I buy only a cargo ship as my second ship. My third ship is a battleship. All that's left after unlocking necessary achievements is alien hunting. I can't wait to get back to that hobby of mine
