Going from the discussion about officers and blades I think it's time for the TBs to build an official ST rank structure. Borrowing from the modern military is ok, but it's also a bit boring and leads to incongruities like a Major apparently commanding the sole remaining templar battleship (cruiser?) in the quadrant. That sticks out like a sore thumb to anyone who knows real military rank. I know that potentially each faction could have a separate rank structure so that could be a little challenging, but the templars should at least have some established order to their order. I know it would take a little time, but it would help smooth things out going forward and hopefully once it's done once, it's done.

What if "Major" is interpreted to be an honorary title, like the real Templar rank he has is equivalent to Captain or Major General, or some other appropriate title for the rank?
E.g. The origin of the title of "Major" can go back to say, a "John Major" who was a famous Templar leader in Luther's hereditary line, and Luther is the descendant who best embodied that title, so it was awarded to him?

Maybe higher rank officer was killed... However it doest explain why he is still major... But probably we see there are two squads maybe three squads left maybe some more but we don't know about them ... Yours, nyra's and major's... Nyra is just paladin but still command her own squad so... I think best individuals amongst squads are leaders and these squad leaders share the leadership of entire Templar force ...In my opinion there is maybe someone first amongst equal like Major but templars honor shalun's law, which is their ultimate authority (isn't it?)...and your Captain isn't commanded to do something he seem to act willingly and chose what assignment he do... So any chain of command besides some inner squad ranks doesn't exist... Just my two cents...

This is how I have interpreted it. Luthor is a Commander-Major or a Captain-Major. Major is a designate. This is how it is used in ST RPG. Similarly the Syndicates have the "Dragoon" and the Clans have "Titan" designations. These are above Major. The unique aspect that we would need to consider is that the Star Trader's military is chartered per faction, and organized on a system and then quadrant level. A Dragoon / Titan in ST RPG Lore is a military rank required to command and entire system's military in the time of need. Likewise "Exemplar" and "Holy" designations indicate the command capacity to, if required by Faction leadership, command and entire Quadrant's forces.

I also see it as the Templars, being as flexible and limited in number as they are, don't have formal Rank structures outside of Officers of various rank, skill and lineage.

Leads one to wonder... Is there a type of caste system in Templar lore?
If you're a Templar grunt (low level equipment hauler for example), and your lineage is a thousand grunts long, will you ever be able to change your job/lineage for yourself or the other grunts who follow you?
Does a Paladin or Engineer hold a higher place at the table over the less glorious ranks, or are they all on an even keel when it comes to how they are viewed?
Genuine questions here, somethings I've always wondered.
