We made several different prototypes and this is the one that we felt was the best. I do hope everyone likes it.
The ability to start with a completely empty ship hull, and pick each component will give the player total control.
Managing mass and cost will be the primary limiting factors, along with component availability.
It is still possible that you'll find ship yards that give great prices, good build times but not 100% of the components you want.
In that case (for example, when I want Faction specific upgrades) I might have a ship built at Zone 1 and then finish the outfitting at Zone 99, which is very similar to the ST RPG process.

I can't wait to test it out! ST2 sounds like it's going to be amazing!

Ship Designer will be turned off in the first phase of the alpha, but we will get there!

I think it's a great idea. The experiance players will know what fits their Captain. I do think 1k turns is quite heavy... unless you are building the Death Star. I also like the idea to speed it up somehow... more of a down payment (creds talk), get goods (maybe randomize it like electronics, spice, etc. Something relevant). No IAP to speed, my view is TB is above that. If a player wants to use the canned ships, I think they have great options, too.

I too concur that this is a great idea and it seems natural.
Also like the idea of the shipwright offering contracts to help you speed it along. ie : Bring me X cargo or negotiate a pardon or any number of things an enterprising captain could do to speed things along.
If your the princes high ranking man then it helps again.
Juicy potential onion layers abound. mmmmmmmm, delicious

I like it. 1-5 in game years (however many turns that might be) seems like a reasonable time frame for a custom ship build, extended by complexity of ship and reduced by skill of the builders.

Easy answer.. I LOVE IT!!!! What would be especially fun... Is if you order it.. but don't survive... If you somehow come across it as a buy-option sometime in a later game

I really like this idea. Order a custom ship. Try to survive long enough to fly it. Finally take it out on it's maiden flight after hours of grinding. Feeling satisfied and awesome about yourself. Get destroyed on the next turn by random alien flyby. A whole new way to ragequit!

Haha, we're definitely going to make sure that there are lots of different reasons to ragequit.
