Introduction:
Hi, I am a hardcore RPG player who revels in games that are both challenging in "Rogue-like" fashion and also offer much individual creativity in fashioning different "builds." In fact, in my former life, I was a hardcore MMORPG player who had some of the highest DPS scores in games like World of Warcraft and LotRO in certain raid boss fights. Mind you: I was not a very skilled player overall in these fast-twitch games. So I am not burnishing my image. I have slow reflexes, and I am not one of those who think well on his "feet." But what I was good at was constantly researching and experimenting with builds - especially DPS builds - and employing those builds in burning mobs down quickly in "static" fights. So I was immediately attracted when a Steam friend introduced this game as a hardcore - and, most importantly, turn-based - game I would likely enjoy.
So far he was right, but alas: The game may have too many moving parts for me to perform well, and the info out there is insufficient or too scattered for me to utilize fully. Hence, I thought it would be best if I posted my build and current progress in a centralized location for people to better see the context of the problems I am encountering - rather than peppering people with seemingly disjointed questions here and there. And please feel free to advise and criticize where I have gone wrong, because at the moment my understanding of the game is very much lacking.
To begin with, I decided to copy the Gallows Tap Dancers build for my first ever run, for two reasons. First, it was the only build posted as a Steam guide, before I found this forum. Second, more importantly, it seemed to parallel my general approach in RPG games. More specifically, I do not like "ranged" play, and I overwhelmingly prefer to play melee characters. And Gallows Tap Dancers had three melees - including a character (Vincent) that played very much like a "spellsword" character found in many RPG games. And even Kyera as a cleric was not a traditional, cloth-wearing wimp, but at least an intermittent front-liner. So the only initial modification I made to the Gallows Tap Dancers build was to replace Vrase with Kincaid, simply because I thought Kincaid's Sure Parry made him an easier tank to play for a first-timer.
Of course, all the best-laid plans of men and mice go awry, and I ran into some problems with the Gallows Tap Dancers, and I have been forced to make further modifications. In essence, I may end up significantly changing 3 of the 4 characters on my team (Vincent, Kyera, and Selen).
Please, do not misunderstand, however: The problems I ran into likely have more to do with my lack of understanding than an inherent deficiency with the build. But builds must fit the style and skill level of a player, and here I am now struggling mightily at level 27-28. But before I get into my current problems, let me list what further modifications I have made - in addition to using Kincaid rather than Vrase.
The first problem was the lack of ranged power I noticed around level 10 or so. Kyera's Banishment was unavailable, and I realized early on that this game - contrary to my preference - requires serious ranged firepower, because the number of the mobs can be overwhelming. So I began leveling Vincent's Lightning Spear at around level 10, and I have abandoned going the melee route later with him. I think this was the right decision, as I simply do not know the mobs and encounters in this game well enough to move and position so many melees in an optimal way. So indiscriminate nuking tactic for now may be the only way to survive.
The second problem also had something to do with the overwhelming number of mobs that the game throws at you. Mainly, I noticed that in many fights Vincent alone is insufficient to curse everyone within the first round to "suppress" enemy fire. So I dropped Kyera's Holy Retribution and decided to level her Ethereal Anguish as well. I have stopped at level 4, because you do get some AoE curse at level 4, and this level for now is sufficient - and Kyera has other talents to level. Once again, I like this modification I made so far.
The third problem is an intensification of the first problem. More specifically, I do not seem to have enough ranged power even with Vincent going Lightning Spear, as the number of enemy spawns - and their difficulty - have increased. Hence, I now contemplate using Selen as a hybrid melee/ranged character as well. In particular, I would like input on the advisability of this decision. Right now, Selen and Kincaid have both continuously performed admirably, so it is not that I am dissatisfied with what she is doing. It's more that I am profoundly unhappy with Vincent's performance as a second ranged nuker. Now, it may be that Vincent's nuke takes a while to develop fully - and can only do so in conjunction with either Eye of the Storm self-buff or Energy Storm curse. But I really don't know whether I can wait another 10 levels or so to find out. And even then, I may be hamstrung by Lightning Spear's lack of range.
But should I simply wait until how I see Vincent performs with either of the lightning buff/debuff supplementing Lightning Spear before making a major change to Selen?
And if I do decide to hybridize Selen, then how do I address the problem that she may have in hitting mobs with ranged, since she will have low bow skill? Do I need to stack accuracy items - weakening her elsewhere - and/or get Flanking Unity or Energy Storm to help her? I guess Kincaid is good enough for now to spend the talent points to help the group, but I am not sure if Vincent has the talent points to spend for the group for now, as he needs to improve his nuking first.
The fourth problem is not an immediate, tangible "problem" per se, but a potential issue that may develop if I hybridize Selen. And the issue is: Does Selen going hybrid mean I should return Vincent to the original build as a melee-oriented, spellsword character and drop Lightning Spear? Since I like melee characters - especially spellsword characters - I would like to try, especially because Vincent's range limitation is getting annoying, as I hinted. But if I change him back, how in the world can he survive as a melee? I just don't see it with the current talent scheme and gear sampling I have seen.
The fifth - and final - problem may not be exclusive to this build but may be instead universal. Still, I am running into it big time, and it has to do with the SP drain issue. I have resolved it with Kincaid definitively, since his high damage cancels out SP expenditure almost completely with SP drain gear. I assume Selen can reach that soon. But I am not so sure with Kyera and Vincent, because their damage per SP expenditure rate is not as efficient as Kincaid; further, they require SP for other reasons than damage. So how do I resolve this issue? I suppose Kyera can be a Sacrifice bot, but that requires a respec that turns her into a melee? If so, then the cure is far worse than the disease, I am afraid.
Anyways, here are the current stats and plans for my characters, and please advise regarding the issues I brought up - or any other issues that you may see developing with this build. I would particularly appreciate if the creator of the Gallows Tap Dancers can comment. Perhaps I am not utilizing his build correctly - and that my problems could have been resolved without dramatic modifications, if I learned the build or the game more?
Dramatis Personae:
Kincaid: Level 27 (HP 639/SP 288)
Role: I am using him as a main tank and melee damage character - which is precisely how I like my RPG characters: Sturdy and punishing.
Current Talents: The usual suspects. Sure Parry 5 (not sure whether I will get it up to 7 to get the 3rd auto-parry); Cunning Footwork 9 (will max); Flshing Blades 4 (will max); Live By the Blade 1 (may stop or get to 4 for the 2nd MP). I may add Flanking Unity if my current issues with accuracy is un-remedied otherwise later.
Key Attributes: 13 Dexterity, 12 Constitution. (I plan on alternating Dexterity and Constitution.)
Key Skills: 16 Blade, 12 Lore.
Key Gear & Buff Bonuses: 6 Accuracy, 25% Critical, 15% SP Drain, 57 Armor, 19 Dodge, 11 Parry. (As you can see, he's heavily geared toward critical damage and SP drain. Parry is low, because he has auto-parry.)
Performance & Questions So Far: I am most satisfied with him among my 4 characters, as he has been the most consistent performer in doing what I asked him to do so far: Tank and deal damage. The only issue is that I think he relies too much on critical hits for damage, so damage tends to be spiky. I am not sure how to improve this issue (Selen has the same issue, by the way). I guess Vincent going Energy Storm is one path.
Selen: Level 28 (HP 684/SP 291)
Role: Off-tank and damage. I am using her essentially the same as Kincaid, except she has the additional scouting and debuff duties via Punishing Blades. However, as mentioned, she may go hybrid and develop ranged capacities as well.
Current Talents: Quicksilver Defense 8 (will max); Dance of Shadows 4 (will get to 7 for 3 MP); Punishing Blades 5 (not sure; may max); Frenzied Blows 3 (not sure; may max). As mentioned I may include Pinning Shot. If I do, I assume I need to drop Frenzied Blows - or at least not quite max it? I don't want to drop Punishing Blades, since it is vital for Kincaid to do damage.
Key Attributes: 13 Dexterity, 12 Constitution. (Like Kincaid, I plan on alternating the two).
Key Skills: 16 Blade, 12 Lore. (May add Bow, as mentioned.)
Key Gear & Buff Bonuses: 5% Critical, 14% SP Drain, 71 Armor, 20 Dodge, 22 Parry.
Performance & Questions So Far: Not bad. She tanks better than Kincaid on ranged mobs, and her damage is okay - albeit lower than Kincaid since she must sink points into one group talent in Punishing Blade (though it may even out if Kincaid will have to divert some talent points to Flanking Unity). The big question is the advisability of going Pinning Shot, and how to go about hybridizing in a way that avoids failing to be competent at either melee or ranged damage.
[Edit: Selen underwent a respect process is now using Pinning Shot as both En1gma and Matrim recommended. She has dropped Frenzied Blows and will now solely rely on Punishing Blades in melee. The melee-oriented Selen performed pretty well, but the new hybrid Selen is incredible, and her respec alone enabled me to clear the Krete area in the Torrent Swamps - which seemed literally impossible before!]
Vincent: Level 28 (HP 462/SP 636)
Role: Curse and ranged AoE damage. This is obviously a modification from the original Gallows Tap Dancers Vincent - who was a curse and melee damage specialist. (But I may move him back to the original role, if Selen is hybridized.)
Current Talents: Frigid Air 6 (may go to 8 for range 7); Flash Freeze 6 (may go to 8 for range 7); Lightning Spear (will max, if I keep him as a ranged AoE damage specialist); Charged Speed 2 (I may move to 4 or even as high as 6 for more and more MP). I will take either Eye of the Storm or Energy Storm to improve Vincent's nuke power, but I have not decided on which one. If I go hybrid with Selen, then I may keep the original Gallows Tap Dancers Vincent though.
Key Attributes: 16 Intelligence, 7 Constitution, 4 Dexterity. (I will begin to level Constitution and Dexterity a bit more now since survivability is becoming an issue.)
Key Skills: 13 Sorcery, 12 Conjuration. (Will alternate the two, with some Lore thrown in).
Key Gear & Buff Bonuses: 8 Ranged Accuracy (he still can't hit jack!), 10 SP Drain, 46 Armor. (Very bad HP pool and defensive stats overall.)
Performance & Questions So far: He's probably the most under-performing member by far - albeit I may be severely under-rating the benefits he provide with his curses, as well as over-rating raw damage (he doesn't do much, again, he can't hit jack - and probably won't until either Eye of the Storm or Energy Storm is leveled). What do you expect? I was a DPS specialist for top MMORPG guilds!
Anyways, so there are two questions with Vincent. First, he curses aren't enough, and he needs to provide some damage, as he is missing more than half of his nukes - and he doesn't do much damage when he does hit occasionally. And in remedying this problem, is Eye of the Storm or Energy Storm preferrable? Second, will Selen going hybrid - if I go that route - be enough nuke with Kyera's Banishment and make Vincent's nukes redundant? And relatedly, if Selen as a hybrid makes Vincent as a nuker redundant, how do I successfully transition him to melee - meaning, more specifically, how do I keep him alive as a melee?
Kyera: Level 27 (HP 543/SP 632)
Role: Curse and ranged AoE damage and heal/de-curse. Another modification from the original Gallows Tap Dancers. Whereas the original was a pure nuker, with Holy Retribution, the single-target nuke was dropped in favor of at least pushing Ethereal Anguish to 4.
Current Talents: Ethereal Anguish 4 (may push it to 8 for range 7); Warder's Shield 4 (will try to max); Banishment 8 (will max); Myshana's Tears (may add another one or two levels since I am getting hit too hard); Purifying Breeze 1 (won't add more). As mentioned Holy Retribution is gone, since I felt I needed another ranged AoE curser to quickly suppress the enemy fire. I may also add Sacrifice, but I am not sure whether I should while retaining Kyera as a nuker.
Key Attributes: 16 Intelligence, 6 Constitution, 4 Dexterity. (Same plan as Vincent: Will begin leveling Constitution and Dexterity more to address survivability issue.)
Key Skills: 16 Invocation, 12 Conjuration. (Will alternate the two, with some Lore thrown in).
Key Gear & Buff Bonuses: 9 Ranged Accuracy, 7% Critical, 14% SP Drain, massive damage & elemental damage add (over 50), 38 Armor. (You can see she's geared to nuke.)
Performance & Questions So far: She was very under-performing until I got her Banishment up to 7 or 8; now she seems to hit more often than any other character, and she does massive aggregate damage - albeit it's a one shot per turn deal (which means perhaps Vincent can surpass her by a lot once maxes both Lightning Spear or one of his elemental buff/debuffs). And she does well as a curser, too, since at level 4 her curse is now an AoE - albeit a smaller one than Vincent's curse. Going forward, my only question is whether I can use Sacrifice while remaining nuker, since I cannot do without her ranged AoE with this set-up, without a primary archer or long-distance nuker in the group.
Anyways, I am sure I left a lot out, but please feel free to jump in and teach!
Edit: Darn it. I thought Energy Storm helps to hit mobs for the group, but it only helps to add lightning damage, if members have lightning damage. So I guess I really need Flanking Unity if I use Selen as a hybrid.
