Has anyone been able to find a way to swap Luxury Cabin for a Prison Cell? I have been tooling around a little bit but can't seem to find it.

PS: Swap out a mass dampner or something. Don't give up officers, and don't remove your torps. <3

What does a mass dampener do?

It applies a -Mass value to your components. This means that you can install other larger Mass components because of it.
However, having Mass Dampeners on board can make cascading damage worse in ship-to-ship combat if they are hit.

Mass Dampners provide the ship Captain two benefits. First, they offset mass from other components. Second, the soak Pilot and Electronics skills. The Crew can turn on and off the mass dampner during flight and combat to change the properties of the ship when required. This gives the Captain more component flexiblity as well as additional dice for navigation and combat tests. The drawback is, as fallen said, MD components tend to cascade damage really hard on their deck.

Wait - so soaking skills is a good thing?

bookworm21 - yes. Hmm, we should post a little YouTube explaining. Or maybe time to start a rules thread.

I talk about it in my introduction video, but probably go too fast.
Lets say the Crew gives you 30 Pilot skill points from Jobs.
So we are going to have 30 dice. What kind of dice is decided.
If our ship SOAKS 32 Pilot, we're 30/32 and are understaffed.
[Understaffed: All dice are rolled as weak dice.]
If our ship SOAKS 15 Pilot, we're 30/15 (200%) and are at maximum bonus.
[Maximum: 15 Dice are rolled as strong, 15 dice are rolled as weak.]
If our ship SOAKS 20 Pilot, we're 30/20 (150%) and are nearly optimal.
[Optimal: 20 Dice are rolled as strong, 10 dice are rolled as weak.]

So say you find your ship at 30/15 ... you should upgrade some components to balance it out to like 30/18 or 30/22 or 30/20 something like that.
* This way you have some padding if Pilots die (so -6 Pilot doesn't put you into understaffed during battle) * As your pilots level up, you will staff up towards 40/20 (which would drive another ship upgrade to 40/28 or something)
Pilot and Nav assists, mass dampers, fuel tanks, etc are all ways to make your ship more efficient and get better use out of your Crew's abilities and skills.

We're going to need a serious instructions/rules/etc type bit of info to keep up with that and all that's available. One thing that I'm sure is coming, is a thing for what/how talents work in some situations. Such as ship battle. I don't know the icons well enough to know what is what frequently still.

And so what are 'weak' dice vs 'strong' dice?

We are working on getting all of that into the mobile version. In PC and Mac OS you can just hover over any talent.
