hi all, just started a new ship as previous one had rubbish sails and was chewing through water fuel i added extra cargo space to new one and now cant add any armour etc seems a bit extreme imo would be good if upgrades told you what they conflicted with imo cheers dan

The manual has more details, but the basic rule is that each ship has one upgrade per upgrade type.
The upgrade types are shown as the categories in the Starport.

Also, the point of the upgrades is that you have to be very selective as to what you are wanting. It's classic "opportunity cost" type stuff because you have to weigh up between the available upgrades ... and even weigh up whether you want to pass on the available upgrades in the hope that you come across a better upgrade on a different planet.
Cory has recommended (and lots of people have) multiple ships. You are then able to have some specialized ships - one for regular space trading jaunts (extra cargo, large capacity, relatively fuel efficient), one for delivery missions (low "detection profile", additional aspects like Omni Stealth Array), and one for hunting/killing (eg one with lots of engines and a predator tracking array).
