I really don't even know how to play ST-1 anymore. Some distant memory made me think Stealth would help me avoid ship detection during space travel? Ok full points into P, N, T. How does Command help me buckaroos escape?

When you and your officers are screaming orders at the Crew, the loudness of the orders depends on Command.
When you and your officers are screaming orders at the Crew, the quality of the orders being screamed depends on Tactics.
Navigation deals with the macro of the battle -- where are we, where are they, where are the weapons?
Pilot deals with the micro of the battle -- turn 3' starboard, increase thrust, dodge missile, manage Void Reactor phase timing.
No matter how good or how loud your orders are shouted, if the people trying to execute them cannot drive your boat, it doesn't ultimately matter how good your orders are.

I think explorer might be my favourite. Or spy, actually - the intelligence officer gives some fantastic missions. Absolutely! The Explorer is the one that appeals most to my imagination. It's the one I hope gets allot of attention. My dream is to explore a huge number of quadrants checking out abandoned stations, and wilderness worlds. I enjoy playing ground encounters with the card driven deck mini game way more than slugging it out in space. I want to make enough cash to "pimp out" the ultimate explorer ship. That can be pretty hard if you get clobbered before you can get to port. Earlier today I was playing a Bounty hunter, prowling in my fancy Dragoon Cruiser. Got slaughtered in my first space battle on basic difficulty. I just couldn't open up enough range to excape. I'm trying the Spy this evening, hoping stealth will let me avoid the worst of them. High Pilot (S-Job, S-Skill) hopefully I can fire a couple torpedoes and get out of town. Seriously does anyone have good advice on the best way a rookie captain can escape ship to ship battle without taking allot of damage?
Captain Dummy's motto: To discover new worlds, seek out new civilizations, to boldly go where no ship has crashed before. Bribe button is your friend. Pay bribes when retreat isn't an opening option, only go into combat if unable to retreat or bribe. Starting combat if the other ship looks to be a serious threat to kill you either because it's larger/better armed or you've taken damage from previous encounters/travel, attempt to retreat, give them a dose of torpedoes and use any range enhancing talents you may have. High levels of pilot and nav will make your odds of changing range and escaping much better. You are looking for 150%+ ship soak on those skills.

xdesperado gives great tips, as usual. I'd also add that some Talents that function as "Bribe++" like "Stiff Salute" for Military Officer can really help avoid fights too. Bribe is your friend. To that point, we are working very hard on the "Combat Preamble" options and system to give you more variety and personality to your responses. It is very basic right now, but I think still a huge improvement over ST RPG where you had the options of 1. Fight 2. Fight With Automatic First Turn Escape Attempt 3. Surrender 4. Surrender with button labeled Acknowledge

That Spy strategy you guys were talking about is inspiring. P.S. Combat preamble enhancements excellent idea, you and fallen make brilliant look easy.
