I am having a surprising amount of fun playing the card mini games. Spy and explorer are my favorite classes to play because of these games and the rage/excitement that comes with the rolls.
I do have a question on the mechanics though that I couldn't find in the game, on the forums, or deciphered from the debug messages. Do the numbers listed on the cards indicate the probability of the event occurring, or the probability of drawing the card, or something else completely? It is probably confirmation bias but if there is a -6 or -5 card on the field, I am bound to select it.

That is how bad the card is. It has absolutely no impact on the chance of it being picked.
We scored them this way so you'd have more information about the cards.
Is that a bad result? A disastrous result? Or game ending doom?
Sorry to confirm your confirmation bias but that's ... that's just how it is.

I don't think it's probability, I think it's Benefit/Severity.

Can't wait to see the gold rimmed cards arrive in these games. Then you will really be going nuts strega

Thanks for the explanation. I figured it was a ranking of the card if it wasn't linked to probability. I'm excited to see how many red gold cards I'll end up drawing.

Is the probability of drawing each card the same?
I like the explorer talent to remove one card.
Might be interesting to have a talent that allows you to change the probability of one or more cards. Maybe a talent that allows you to change probability of adjacent cards, so it's only useful in certain circumstances. I could describe that idea further if there's interest.
When exploring lately, I seem to have penchant for beating the odds by drawing the negative card more often than expected.

tenbsmith - the drawn cards are directly related to the place you are, and its attributes (risk, reward ... or in case of patrol/blockade/spy the zones of the system you are orbitting). As you level and get other jobs, you'll find more and more powerful card manipulation talents. Pirates can replace a negative card with merchants, etc.

We have to get some terminology straight.
"Drawing a Card" == This card is given to you, face up, as a possible result "Hitting a Card" == This card is the last one standing, the results of the exploration "Discarding" == A card that is removed from the possible list, it fades out and goes away "Picking a Card" == This card is selected for a Talent (to discard or re-draw)

Question about this system. It seemed that you could exhaust a planet by exploring it too much in ST (at least to me, is that true). Does the same hold true for ST2? Will the deck get progressively nastier over time, or could you sit and explore over and over again?

You can exhaust the planet, for a time, yes.
It will tell you that and refuse to allow you to draw new cards.

It will not get progressively nastier over time, but it's ability to provide hands of cards is based on the values of the zone and planet, as well as rumors in the zone/planet/quadrant.

I still have the same question tenbsmith asked earlier. Is the chance of hitting a given card 1 in 5 (i.e. equal between all cards) or does the percentage of getting a certain card change based on what the game is testing?

I still have the same question tenbsmith asked earlier. Is the chance of hitting a given card 1 in 5 (i.e. equal between all cards) or does the percentage of getting a certain card change based on what the game is testing? It works like cards. There are 5 cards and they are shuffled, and one is drawn. It is random.Like cards. Hopefully that helps.

It may seem like you always hit that xeno combat card if it is showing, but that's really just because you remember hitting it more than you do the ones that just injure a few crew.
I know it seems that way to me, too.

I'm watching this carefully. Somehow I'm awfully good at picking that one red card out of 4 or 5.
