@brutusaureilus - ok, thanks for the feedback. We'll keep working on it. Maybe we will eventually bounce some of the other contact types instead. There are still contact services being implemented, so we'll just stick to the list we have atm.

Profession will not being adding unique contacts.
These are stored in the Template so they have to be portable and shareable.
If you see one on the list you think everyone would be willing to trade for MO, suggest that :0

What about the Starport Mechanic? The only thing she seems to do is offer Mechanic for hire, which are already available on many worlds. I've never seen her affect my repairs (even if it were possible, to specifically travel to her planet to do a major repair to save a few creds is incredibly risky and not practical).
Also, once I had her spawn on a settlement that didn't even have a starport! XD

I think Merchant or Spice Merchant could be removed from starting Contacts. Having both is a bit redundant, as they both offer Permits, while the Spice Trader also sells gear and buys intel. Unless there is stuff going on under the hood that isn't visible to us, there would be no reason to take Merchant over Spice Merchant.
