My missions are taking me further into the other quadrants. On a diplomatic mission one stop was at a "Devaltos Palace on Kimmeria in Janissary Expanse quadrant" Great! Maybe I can locate a DeValtos Prince because they are getting more irritated about our diplomatic mission and I'm racking up the negative rep. Well you guessed it, only descriptive text there was no royalty to contact there.
There are so many planets to explore now. Missions are requiring multiple hyper jumps. How do I recognize someone from another faction I could buy a pardon from?
Maybe this should be a wishlist item: Place an icon next to a world indicating you could negotiate with the local government, i.e. get a pardon?
I realize you can't get along with everybody, but even doing peaceful missions pretty soon the only faction I will get along with is my own (Cadar). That will choke off getting fuel, repairs, medical treatment, trade. Suddenly my travel will become very limited, restricting me to take missions inside my own faction controlled quadrants.
I'm taking the worst case scenario, but without knowing how to get a pardon now, I'm going to get into real trouble soon.

Give one of your officers the Merchant job.
Take this talent.
Market Rumors When executing a trade at the Exchange worth over $5,000, chance of gaining an introduction to a Contact from the local Faction.
Trade like crazy in De Valtos zones, hope the Prince or somebody who can introduce you to him pops. Doing missions for whoever pops, Prince or not, won't hurt your campaign to become rehabilitated with De Valtos, either.

I Wonder if being a Merchant Captain has an advantage other than better trade, can he discover royal contacts. I wonder if having a Merchant contact helps? It also seems to me (perhaps in the future) If one of your contacts is a "Fixer" he should fix political problems, maybe like a quadrant lawyer. Making a single trade over $5,000 looks like a tough nut to crack until further down the road. Right now I'm playing an Explorer with 1st officer as Military/Commander.

Well there is a lesser Merchant talent that just pops contacts at random just for being in the Spice Hall. You can afford that, at least. Politicians, I am delighted to see, can also pardon misdeeds. And it is inexpensive, though of course they have to only be somewhat unhappy with you. I am not trying this places where I am a Legendary War Criminal, and the like.
5K sales aren't that hard. You just need enough cash on hand to buy some more pricey items, once you know where you can unload them again before the pirates take them from you. But you may want a bigger cargo hold, if you are in a Juror, still.

I've been thinking about this problem too and how hard it makes the beginning levels. I was thinking you should have a contact in at least one other faction at the start, some random politician so you can easily befriend at least two factions without wasting a precious talent point.

One Prince 0 rep Prince from each faction, spread throughout the quadrants. The contact you choose can be a prince, and it raises you faction's Prince rep to known contact levels.

I'm finding reputation loss challenging as well. I'm trying to be very careful about mission selection to avoid torsion loss. Bidding my time until I can establish contacts in a few other factions.
Ironically, my strategy will be to look for missions against my faction, since I can afford to lose a bit of reputation with them.

The best move is to accept that you'll have enemies. A Captain cannot be a true friend to the glorious House of Thulun without irritating a few foppish Faction fools.

Agreed about not being too concerned about bad rep at a couple of factions. But, it is desirable to have good rep with a few factions, especially in a 6 faction game. Finding those first out-faction contacts can be challenging.
Playing Merchant and taking the Talent that allows you to pick up contacts in the Spice Hall is good. Also prioritizing Contacts in Captain design.
It might be nice to provide a few out-faction contacts for Basic difficulty.

With a high contact priority I've had a good selection of factions along my contacts. I feel that this is what makes it so appealing as a choice.and competitive with ship/experience etc

Your Faction reach will be limited by contact count. Great advice -- if you're struggling with this, increase your starting contact count. Then, use the multi-Faction contacts you get to buy some introductions (improved for next update).

I just waiting for the next version where trading a certain amount raises rep. That'll help out with bounty hunting and the negative rep that comes with it.

As more and more Talents fill in, you'll have more and more options for this.
Other idea, find Contacts Exploring / Spying / Blockading / Patrolling.
Also, check out the Talents which all help you learn Contacts:
Unseen Traces (Explorer) Listening Post (E-tech) Talk of Far Worlds (Hyperwarp Nav)
