See this button? I hate it. I never want to press it. Every time I want to go to orbit I am pleased to hit the perfectly reasonable 'orbit' button right beside it. So, what is going on in my mind when I hit that back button? Well, usually I want to go back to the starport. Sometimes I want to go back to the doctors, or back to a contact -- at any rate, back to some place I had already visited while I was on-planet (in orbital). I did not want to launch. I wondered if I could learn to keep my little fingers away from the button, but after a month, the problem is as bad as ever. Seems that 'what does a back button do' is part of deep mental cognition in me, and not one that adjusts very well. My grav sick crewmates now want my head on a stick. My engineer is complaining about the waste of water fuel. My mission specialist is talking about all those deadlines we might have made if I wasn't spending so much time going up and down and up and down. All the other captains are calling me Captain YoYo, though not to my face, let me tell you. Any more Captain YoYos out there wishing to see this button gone?

That's an interesting one.
Back == Orbit on this screen.
I can see an argument for removing Back.
I dunno, that might confuse people tho.

Yah, depending on the screen I'm on, I usually want the back button to be a 'previous screen' button; right now the results of the back button sometimes do that, or the default/catchall seems to send the user 'up' (figuratively 'zoom out' to the next level).
I've just been making some mental notes, but since it's more UI related than anything, figure I'd wait to provide input til we have a UI that's closer to what TB's envision. So... 'gone' isn't the reaction I usually have. I guess it's more along the lines of 'can't wait for a better UI'. :-)

We just cannot store the full "previous screen" stack and all the memory required to re-assemble them. We did some prototyping on what it would take and it just isn't possible.
We will keep working on improving the UI, but it will be evolutionary not revolutionary we're not going to be able to totally reinvent the engine's scene system for ST2.

Hmmm, I can see the feeling that it should work more like ESC key or middle mouse button. Clearing the current thing on the stack, and if you had nothing else visible (closed the Exchange) it might go to Orbit.
That would be very hard to manage with all the many types of screens and things you can bring out.
Next update moves does not address this.

If it were just greyed out and did nothing when you were on a planet, that would work. Anybody wanting to go into orbit would have to hit the orbit button, which I do not think is too much of a hardship. Indeed, the 'this thing costs money' principle argues that it should not be a back-button sort of thing, but an ask-for-it-specifically sort of thing.

Just happened again. And the progression was -- Prince wants me to take some diplomat all over the galaxy, many, many pricey stops. I decide that it is time to buy a luxury passenger cabin before I take that job. I get one installed at the stardock (feeling quite pleased with myself for remembering not to hit the back button to go there) and then <sigh> hit the back button trying to get back to the mission.

Let's see how our new crew looks. Maybe I need to hire somebody. Wow. Look at those nice soak stats. Maybe we are well-enough staffed as it is. Let's close this display and see what is on sale in the exchange. <hits back button, and blasts off into orbit again>

Mistakenly hitting the back button planetside is causing me to bounce in to orbit often enough that my pilots are levelling twice as fast as everyone else! For me the issue is that a lot of the sub-menus do not have their own back buttons yet, so after visiting the spice hall etc I am hitting 'back' to return to the 'bare / default' view as shown in the OP, and going in to orbit instead. I anticipate the final UI will resolve this and have 'back buttons' for all sub-menus, but grävling suggestion of having the button greyed out planetside sounds really good.

Yah, your sub-menu comment of having a way to either 'go back' or 'close' on key screens was kind of what I envision with the final UI. Also, I get grävling 's frustration, but realize we are still alpha 1.0.x

This is one of those things where as a designer, I'm just SO glad we have that behavior tracking data. We shouldn't get too worked up about the Back button, because it really isn't causing that many issues. I'm sure fallen will come up with something that works for most people.
