This particular design doesn't take damage very well at all -- but you don't notice that in Phase 1 because it out-classes opponents. Thanks for the analysis, Cory Trese . Very useful going forward. What kind of changes would help improve damage soak? More armor obviously. Do the Deflector Array and Sensor Array do anything on that front?

I think the biggest issue with this strategy is you're more likely to destroy the enemy ship's hull than components.
Higher level weapons increase hull damage and that's the lowest reward / high penalty way to win a ship combat.
The improve damage soak, use less booster components, don't use mass dampeners, reduce the complexity of the weapon systems.
I put two of these ships up against each other -- and it's fireworks, massive damage and hull collapse ... and hard to predict who will win if the match up is similar and both are design for damage and hit accuracy.

I think the ones that have (relatively) low base damage and high void/radiation damage?

This would be a rather neat post-release feature. Design a ship and then submit it to Cory Trese's torture gauntlet. See how well it does against similar ships! Or compete against other designs created by forum members. Interested parties, get your bets down now, on this splendid display of ingenuity. See any de Valtos betting agent for more details!

Do critical or crippling having anything to do with doing component damage? I seem to recall some mention of this elsewhere.

What translates into 'good chance of killing the enemy captain, forcing a quick surrender', assuming that exists?

So, when Cory Trese said "I think the biggest issue with this strategy is you're more likely to destroy the enemy ship's hull than components. Higher level weapons increase hull damage ..." I think he was referring to greater amount of damage higher level weapons do, NOT that higher level weapons are intrinsically less likely to damage components. Some higher level weapons have higher critcial rates, so they are more likely to damage components. But it doesn't matter because you've already destroyed your opponent by then with the massive damage output, especially given that opponents' ships are not improving much in phase 1. When the game launches, you'll likely need those higher level weapons to survive when you are many turns in.

Might be a good idea to have a few low/medium power weapons to soften the target up, and reserve a high-power weapon as a last resort if things are not in your favor, or it's just taking too long. (I hope there will be no 200-turn stalemates like in STRPG )

(I hope there will be no 200-turn stalemates like in STRPG ) ROFL, you've really gotta hit that ultra rare condition to get past 40 turns ... but anything is possible in ST RPG. Any game with RNG, if you play a billion rounds then one of them will eventually be crraaaazy ROFL. That will be just as true of ST2. Who knows what people will say happens "all the time"

Speaking of gun bunny. I was looking to upgrade the railguns on my ship... I only see level 1.. I'm assuming there's going to be better ones eventually? And perhaps a ship-component that can boost reactor points, so it's not all just talents? After-all, if you're going to make a ship-hunter of some type, you're going to want to shoot more guns at a time.

Just scroll down for Railguns or check other sizes. Looks like Railguns go to 7.
Thanks for playing~

Plus there's this super awesome rail gun for a large compartment, it's got awesome damage.

Alex Fury, building on what Choco said, the Railgun you are trying to upgrade is probably small size, so to upgrade your railgun, you'll need to find a medium component to upgrade and switch your current small railgun slot to something else.
