I also play on Impossible and I have no problem sending my captain into crew combat. In fact, I've been playing a Knight Errant build for the past couple hours and my captain is doing very well on the front lines so far. That must be . . . thrilling. For crew combat captain builds I recommend having Attributes and Skills in the template set to C or higher, and having enough Strength/Fortitude for at least 170 HP. I nearly always go with Attributes (A), Skills (B), Ship (C), Contacts (D), Experience (E). One advantage of the Knight Errant build is that it makes great use of a high Strength, since this Attribute not only increases HP but also accuracy (all blades, some rifles) and damage (only blades). It makes it easy to know where to pour the points!

The best combos for pirates right now is to stack Intimidate Pirate/Quartermaster/Zealot maybe? I'm not sure about Zealot. It's true that Zealot and Quartermaster share two class skills (Command and Intimidation), which makes those jobs synergistic, but the higher half of the Zealot's Intimidation-related talents are for crew combat and would probably stay unused, as would the Zealot's Blades skill, since neither Pirate nor Quartermaster are good for crew combat. Commander is an alternative to Zealot. Like Zealot, Commander shares two class skills with Quartermaster (the same: Command and Intimidation). Commander has only one intimidation-related talent, and for crew combat, but this talent doesn't depend on a weapon skill (and is powerful): "In crew combat, Intimidating Command hits 2 targets causes 10 (+Intimidation) Morale Loss." Diplomat might not be a bad choice, either! This job has only one intimidate-related talent, but it's one that'd work great for a Pirate: "Increase profit when ransoming defeated ship back to their Faction by 10% + Intimidate Skill" Let's try: PIRATE KING ======================== 1. Another option would be to make a crew-combat-worthy Pirate, taking advantage of this job's "+15% Critical" trait (which, actually, doesn't fit a class without crew combat skills).
