Thought of a few, understated using "the" as an article for emphasis.
The reach
The scoring
The cipher (a secret or an encryption. Why is this happening?)
The sorrow
The greed (all-consuming)
The longing
There're few euphemisms that you can then use from that.
eg. for the greed "he was eaten"
the reach "he was touched"
"he met with sorrow"
Sure there're loads of better ideas, but may stimulate some.
