Two modifiers to your calculations ... 1 - Stealth counts twice when it comes to determining level up. This means, everything else being equal, a person who wants to focus purely on getting to a particular level will do so twice as fast by investing solely in Stealth than any other attribute
2) The Spy has lower extra values for sure, but you have to count the value of his starting cargo. Further, the spy has more than one point in Pilot, Tactics, and Stealth, which count for more in your first encounter than say a Merchant (Negotiation + Pilot), or Smuggler (Negotiation + tactics).
So for me it's not how many extra points you get at the beginning ... but rather, how they are distributed.
In old-school DnD terms, you wouldn't want a mage who has 18 str, 18 cons, but 7 int. You'd want to pick this character as a fighter who can count the number of enemies he will slaughter in a day (but not how many in a week).

And OT talking,a fire shield could make more hard work...=P seriously talking,i prefer focusing on class/my gamestyle skills...=) i take this game,and every captain i make,as a life way...magma world(24)?ok,let boost my Explore skill...that damn vudka too expensive??ok,some point to Neg...i don't say it's the right way,but programming in a maniacal way my captain won't save him from the funny alien,or from the cadarian ship that has err the reverted testicles(sorry for the blasphemy) that day....Death can smile u in the next quadrant =P

Id imagine you guys have put much work into balancing the various classes. Sily me, I thought the scores would be closer! Thanks for the tip on stealth, I knew thrre was something goin on there! Figured out early on with if you were careful and focused on your 4 base skills, you could boost your stats but stay level one, thereby gaining a solid advantage over other level one captains. Sometimes, putting points into stats to gain advantage can seem like "chasing my own tail" so to speak.
"Captain!" "Yes, what is it ensign?" "Sir, theres a Cadarian Mega-Cruiser on an intercept course, bearing oh-nine-seven-two mark 6!" "Steady on course, ensign." "But Captain! We count a total of nine hundred and seventy seven forward-facing torpedo bays!" "Steady on course Ensign, thats an Order!" "Sir! We are in a solar war!" "At ease, ensign, steady on course. They wont shoot us."
