Sound FX muted when exiting the app or after a phone call. Fixed by force quit the app. (Same in ST4X and Templar Battleforce) Iphone 8+ IOS 12.1.4 I realize this is an old thread and bug report but it is still valid so I'll elaborate on my findings...
The bug reported: SFX (NOT the music) on iOS will totally cut off after the game is backgrounded, then returned to.
The bug is valid under iOS 12.x.x, NOT under iOS 13.x.x. A temporary work-around if you wish to remain under iOS 12.x.x is to simply background the game again, then return to it after the first time the bug appears.
Example:
1. Initial run of game 2. Game backgrounded (due to phone call, running a different app, etc)
3. Returned to game (sound bug) 4. Game backgrounded (temporarily)
5. Returned to game (sound bug is gone)
The other way to clear the bug (as was mentioned by the OP) is to force-quit, then restart the game (not always the best option)
I found this out because I have two iPad minis and one iPhone SE (2020): One iPad mini 4 running iOS 12.4.1 One iPad mini 5 running iOS 13.7 One iPhone SE (2020) running iOS 13.6.1
The mini 4 under iOS 12.4.1 exhibits this bug The mini 5 under iOS 13.7 does NOT exhibit this bug The iPhone SE (2020) under iOS 13.6.1 does NOT exhibit this bug
The OP mentioned this bug effects two other games as well as STF. My findings point to the games themselves possibly not being at fault but iOS (or some strange interaction between the game and that particular version of iOS).
I will however add a request to have the two different volume settings (SFX and music) checked into/normalized. As it is now, I have to set the SFX volume to 100% while the music is set to 20%. The SFX volume is way too low in relation to the music volume.

Yeah I haven't had any recently but at least in Android world I've noticed a lot of apps can act weird if they are suddenly forced out of the foreground. Im by no means a programmer but I have been flashing/rooting/modding Android for years. So it's more than likely that Android's base code could be misbehaving when an app goes from foreground to background. In Android at least when you have root privilege there are memory sliders that let you move how much memory is relegated to background processes keeping their state in cached memory. Might be a way on a jailbreak iphone too I just don't know. Never used apple products.

Great to hear you are no longer having the bug in 13.x! Hopefully, the upcoming iOS 14 won't be bringing more issues to the table.

Great to hear you are no longer having the bug in 13.x! Hopefully, the upcoming iOS 14 won't be bringing more issues to the table. An update for iOS 14 (released 9/16/2020):
The dropping SFX issue is the same as under iOS 13.x, that is, no longer really an issue.
I have not updated my iPad mini 4 to iOS 14, it still remains under iOS 12.4.1. The mini 5 and the SE (2020) have both been updated to iOS 14.
I personally still feel that the SFX audio setting is much too low and should be increased within the game to match better with the music volume. My current game settings as I mentioned above are SFX: 100%, Music: 20%
