Well, the thing is, both would have brought forth more "should have" scenarios again. Like "I should have brought more WF..." or "I should have ran through the Red Sectors to the nearest planet to stock-up...", eh?

I imagine its like poker. Key to poker is not making mistakes, a mistake being any action made that you would not have made if you could see all the cards, I.e. all the variables. Also reminds me of chess. While strategizing future moves, I still try to be on the lookout for the BEST POSSIBLE move on a given turn. The best move might not even be directly supportive of the overall strategy, but it is still Necessary!
Id say death happens when the number of different actions available to you dwindles, and the choices that are available all have the posibility of death or damage. The thing about the shouldas and couldas (shouldnt have taken that contract, could have stocked up on torpedoes and repairs) is that those choices were made when there were MANY courses of action available. Death only happened because that series of choices eventually led to a choice bottleneck, with all outcomes leading to death.
Id like to think a Captain could be played indefinetely. With the escapeshuttle, even hull collapse can be thwarted. While death may seem inevitable, I postulate that every individual instance of death is avoidable. Or Was avoidable... Also remember that it was all of YOUR actions leading up to your demise which result in your demise. So while playing, ask yourself "am I engineering my own Death?) Even seemingly unavoidable deaths from random encounters or aliens are still avoidable. You could've plotted a course through a different square!

Yes, and like I said, if we could do all that, we'd be breaking banks in every casino along the LV strip. ;D And hello, my NYC penthouse suite!

Sure if we knew all the variables it'd be easy! Well it'd still be hard but it would be possible. Also if we had reams of experience robbing banks. More experience = higher rate of success. Real life experience of course.

Its like, highest brobablility of survival. Should prepare for an accident insead of a dangerously powerful assassinate target? You can count that you only need to go throught 1 red square so its not very high danger if getting accident. Instead getting a hard enemy is normal... So you have higher probabilities of survival if you prepare for enemies. But on higher levels, bad stuff happens more oftrn so the probability if death is so high you cant survive very well... Unless you prepare for everything, which is almost impossible... For humans. You cant just survive a high level alien attack after getting to a fatal accident...
