Dont add stats untill u can afford a pimp ship (at lvl1 even alians are push overs). I start with a spy and use the Danti as my starter ship has decent fire power cargospace and enuff speed to runaway if u must. I tend to join the clans to begin with as all 3 clan home worlds are very close so it has a large safe zone only accept delivery contracts that affect Indy so I dont piss any body off from the start, and mind those embargos when visting the pawnshops. Once I can afford a nice ride and pimp it out then u lvl up stats should have enuff stats to jump up a bunch of lvls instantly the game gets alot easier and more fun untill u run into those pesky alains then i hope u have a realy fast and quik ship to run away with or its probably game over. *Thats just my style*

Trade with Indies when embargoes are on. Build Pilot and stealth heavily. Avoid faction space where you have -RP.

In my humble opinion on crazy, insane and impossible you don't want to piss people off until you're at least a level 10, and have a sizeable bankroll. What I do when I'm just starting out (this may be cheating, but) is don't use your experience and remain a level 1 until you get enough rep to have a trade permit with everybody. Then focus on gaining level 1 military rank with everybody. This way you don't get shot at as much, and go broke fixing your ship. Only take well planned contracts that you can handle. Buy a smuggler's hold ASAP so you can surrender to faction military ships in faction space. This will keep you from failing contracts. Once you have a trade permit they won't bother you anymore. Once you accomplish all of this you should have about 70+ XP built up. Put most of it into pilot, and tactics. You'll tighten up your fuel efficiency and be able to participate in spy, and solar wars where you get mad rep and XP.

Good idea captmo...
Also, keep a keen lookout on rumors, especially the officer ones. The nice thing about the majority of officers, is that they are CHEAP. only a percentage of what you have. I've never NOT been able to afford one. Smuggler/scout is helpful in particular along with the hold. Pilot and Political are useful. First for fuel efficiency, second for keeping you honest for Embargoes. (I ditch the first-mate as soon as I fill up on officers and am going for a third.. .If not just right off the bat)

I have not seen all of the above, but let me tell you:
MOST ESSENTIAL THINGS ARE WATER, REP and TRADE PERMITS.
Everything else can wait. make sure you farm the easier contracts until you can get trade permits off all 6 factions.
Following which, you may do anything you want.

6 Trade Permits is a tall order -- especially on higher difficulty levels.
I usually aim for 3 and then stay out of the other Faction's space as much as I can.
