Hi Cory and forum fellows,
What are the stories linking the Spy Officer and the Pilot (2 of my favorites) to their respective rumors (starport accident and spice trader convention)? This may have been covered or maybe Cory can remember why he thought of those.
Also, just to confirm, the Spy officer doesn't actually help with surveillance spying from space? Any reason? Is the conceptualization that the Spy is more of a field agent doing in-person, on-the-ground spying rather than a remote sensing high tech guru?
Any responses would be fun and welcome!
Thanks!

As a back story - the spy probably caused the Starport accident (as an act of sabotage).
For pilots, Spice is the thing that gives them additional bonuses to effectiveness. Carry spice in your hold and your pilot will fly more efficiently.
So where there is an excess of spice, you'll find a few skilled pilots.

The whole thing with the spice is a reference to the book Dune actually, but if I were to explain it to you it would be a major spoiler. That being said, I can explain the whole thing to you if you don't care about spoilers and you really want to know the reasoning.

Psshh... you're being a drama queen, inatun. @taatuu- Yes, it's a drug. But it's a drug that heightens human senses to superhuman levels. When high on spice, spacers can literally see how time-space works and are able to navigate at hyper-light/warp speed without hitting fatal obstacles.

I once saw how spacetime works - definitely wasn't spice.

Ok. Not a bad spoiler. but in ST they are DEFINITELY not using hyperspeed.. Every turnnis a week so it takes about 5 weeks to get to the next planet... Wouldnt say it very fast..

Yeah, I guess I was being a bit overdramatic, I was just remembering what a revelation it was for me.

Thought spice directly facilitated space travel by allowing the pilot to warp space with his mind. And pilots were so addicted they lived in tanks with a constant atmosphere of spice, and they were no longer quite human. And the blue eyes...
Dune is #?@&!%$ EPIC!

I wouldn't go as far as saying that Spice can change the genetic make-up of a human. But I'd agree that the pilots themselves would FEEL that they are no longer (more like BETTER than) just humans while they are high on spice.
