If playing a Zealot on Impossible, sell all your weapons first, then buy WF, pick up a few contracts from the Spice Hall, then finish your starting contract.

First rule of Startraders?
Do not talk about ETA's!
Second rule of Startraders?
You do not ask about ETA's!!!
Third rule of Startraders?
If you encounter a Xeno, you have to fight!

And buy WF before you complete the contract? Oh wait, if you play at Impossible difficulty, you start with no money so you're stuck there Extra starting cash unlock! :-p

No, that option turns off on higher difficulties. Besides, 2 * 0 still equals 0. =)

I always blockade at least once on top of the first contract planet. More often than not I encounter a ship and loot what they have. Helps out to get enough fuel to start.

capthawk start as a spy. Take your ship directly to an independent planet before completing your first mission. SELL your electronics and weapons and you have enough money to buy some units of WF. Complete first mission, and then work hard to survive until you get yourself above the poverty line.

I've been using MO custom build to test the waters at each difficulty, then once I get get one to thrive (lvl 50-ish, longer if I feel I'm learning alot still) I'll make one more combat type to make sure it wasn't dumb luck I made it. Next, up a difficulty or a Star Trader. The only Impossible I've done was in free, I got one MO to thrive and bought elite. I wonder if the starting difficulty is the same? I know it caps at lvl 23 or thereabouts.

Spies are great because you automatically get Pilot, Tactics, and Stealth as your starting skills. Similar to Pirates but Spies also get stuff in their cargo bays that are useful for their job, AND make for emergency funding Starting difficulty is pretty much the same across free and Elite. That is, you'll have the same encounter rate and challenges in free or Elite. Only a small advantage of having a smaller map on Free. That's not really too much of a problem because you can refuse contracts that are too far away and can just work in the top-left portion of the Elite map until you have gained enough skills to kill comfortably. I'm flying a spy right now in Impossible, and am at the stage that when I have an encounter with a non-Alien, I am supremely confident that the enemy is toast and I will come out untouched (gun-bunny). With Xenos, I play much more cautiously, but my pilot is higher than 200% of my level, and I've been boosting tactics too.
