How about saving the last played map to the settings when creating new captains?
I don't like that much galaxies with long dead-end arms, so I've rolled a lot of maps until I was satisfied with a new "default" one where I'd rather like to play my captains from now on. It's a pity you always have to select it on creation unlike the other settings on the left.
