AFAIK the only talent that allows auto-melee counter attack after use is Swordsman's Sharp Counter (use the talent and then if attacked from position 1 or 2 with the attacker moving you counter attack without using an action, this also uses Balanced Blade talent as the counter attack if the talent is known). I am seeing the same counter attack (including using Balanced Blade) using Wing Commando's Whirling Blade.
My build
Wing Commando 8/Pirate 6/Swordsman 11 currently
Known talents: Wing Commando: Whirling Blade, Breakneck Assault, Boarder's Assault Pirate: none yet Swordsman: Bravery Line, Sharp Counter, Balanced Blade, Strength of Steel, Devastating Charge, Flash Fury
I begin every CC with a Whirling Blade to get the buffs, also the only On Init my team knows is Bravery Line so it always procs. If the enemy Position 1 or Position 2 attacks this Swordsman afterwards but before I can use another attack (generally Sharp Counter comes next) it responds as if I had used Sharp Counter (without the Sharp Counter buff showing above the Swordsman and without using Sharp Counter in this combat yet) meaning Balanced Blade is used as a counter attack.
Is this intended? Sharp Counter's text is not clear in how it allows counter-attacks and so I am thinking this might be the case here. If not and counter-attacks should be limited to Sharp Counter, we have a bug.

I have often seen my swordsman counterattack when they know Sharp Counter but haven't cast it yet. I assumed this means that just having the talent is enough to enable a counterattack, independently of when any buff is granted. If that is the case, and the hover/description does not make that clear, maybe it is just a help text clarification.

Sorry, re-reading the thread ... It all is 100% correct, except the part where Whirling Blade lacks the description that notes that it counter-attacks just like Sharp Counter. Lol not sure when the description got borked, I am sure it went out right when WC launched. It's always been this way, its why WC rocks!

So, a sword wielder who counterattacks without either the SC or WB buff icon visible is a bug. Is that right?

Neither Sharp Counter or Whirling Blade have in-game text noting that they cause counter-attacks. We had this discussion when I reported a bug with counter attacks earlier (I didn't know Sharp Counter caused counter attacks and I reported a bug). It should be made more clear in game that these talents have these effects. It would make them more popular.

Woooops!
So both Sharp Counter and Whirling Blade lost this in the last few weeks.
They both used to say it.
Fixed for next.
