the spy class is good also for lower difficulties, surv bonus is useful with surv contracts(normally with good/high pays) and stealth pilot and tactics starting values help, sure then,on higher difficulties, extra cash obtained by selling initial cargo isnt bad

Another question what about promotions?. When I get them the contracts are farther away, is it worth it?

Always shoot for nearby contacts.

sly - getting promotions, Death Warrants, and the like are asking for more responsibility from the faction. Especially in the early game, it is worth not getting them (from my play-style) because then you are setting yourself up to do missions you are not ready for. I always wait a while before getting invested in a faction like that, when you have your feet under your properly.

If you are just vying for the award, then as Fallen says, at most, buy a trade permit and naught else. The higher the rank you are, the more difficult the contract is. Sure you get paid more for longer distance contracts and contracts when you have high reputation and rank, but don't get distracted by shiny things.
In saying that, if you have built your character up first by doing some trading, piracy (of Steel Song of course), then you might have built yourself up enough to buy a couple of ranks. Having ranks gives you access to military hardware and ships (think Honor of Thulun, or Javat Cutter). Avoid the death warrant as the ideal contracts to go for (early on) are delivery contracts. You become the glorified Planet Express guy. Once you build up tactics and pilot, you can go for a few surveillance or blockade missions. Take on any of those early on and you burn through your contract time with one unsuccessful action after another.
Another trick I've employed is to take a contract with the faction you have just completed a contract against. That allows you to minimize the negative RP that you get while going for the award. Again, this rule of thumb doesn't hold true when you do a contract against Steel Song. If you have time, blockade their planets as a bonus to whoever signed your contract paycheck.

Good advice. I will implement that into my playing style.
