I know Device Freak can come from normal trait mutation, but I've only seen it appear on non-combat crew like mechanics and navigators this way. I have also found it once as just one of the starting three traits on a military officer. I know trait mutation affects the captain and even stuff like orbital salvage traits can apply to the captain. For example, my current captain has Driven due to orbital salvage, and Drunk and Vulture from trait mutation.
Is it possible to get Device Freak on the captain? If so, how would one go about that?

Yes, it can mutate onto a captain.

Good to know! Willing to offer any hints on how to do that? Does the captain need certain classes, skills, or actions to make that happen?
Also, it appears trait mutation stops once you hit 5 traits. Is that the max trait count?

6 is maximum.

Things that can trigger DEVICE_FREAK
- Black Market Success, Salvage Success - MechSync Trait (From Radiation Storms OR Scavenger Trait)
Maybe it could use another mutation path, after analysis

Thank you! That really helps to know for my next playthrough. On that note, thanks for making a game that's good enough to play once, much less multiple times!
Any insight in how other traits can get triggered that you're willing to share? None of that stuff is on the trait mutation page on the Wiki but it's very useful to know.

I will look into some way to improve the wiki.
The mutation tree isn't well documented -- I think because it isn't something players can generally control, it has usually been ok as a black box.

Players are welcome to document their discoveries on the wiki or any other community forum!

Also this is probably something that we could add to the Saved Game Editor for the STF - Modding Edition.
Players will probably want one-click access to adding or clearing Traits -- and an editor for tweaking your Cap and Officers.

That sounds lovely! I personally am playing on an unrooted Android. I don't believe you've got plans for adding mod support to Android and last I knew there still isn't a plan to add save game backups or transfers, either. But I'm definitely glad that modding support is being added, even if I won't get it myself. Having customizable difficulties and working toward mod support shows you care that players really, truly enjoy your games. Good on you for that!

Unfortunately, Google Play doesn't have infrastructure for mod support like Valve does in Steam. We'll keep an eye on the future possibilities for our next game, however.

Regarding the save editor, if that's a stand-alone program and you do implement Android save backups (even if you just allow backing up to an accessible area so we don't have to root the device to get the file) that could work. I understand that would be some extra work for a limited segment of the player base, though, and I've got no sense of entitlement regarding that. I'm already happy with what I paid for.
I've read elsewhere that the saves are just encrypted databases (probably SQLite?). Just giving access to save backups and a save decryptor would be enough. Mostly, I just really would like to have more control over my starting Doctor, since I always make that crew member into my wife and rerolling new games repeatedly to get her to have good stats and traits it... a lot. Having the ability to better control our starting crew (or really just that one officer) is my dream. Save editing would do that for me.

They are SQLite. For iOS devices, Apple has done a ton to support file access and whenever possible, we jump on board.
We'll keep pushing on Google to offer such things, and for future games we will keep trying to improve.
For Steam players, the goal is definitely to provide just that type of experiencing -- tweaking the starting Doctor, or editing the map or changing traits to experiment. However, that's all tied to the mod version which we can't bring to mobile.

How easy would it be to produce a save decrypter? And as for Google, there is another game I've played on Android, Grim Quest, which does allow backing up and restoring saves from an accessible location, so I know that can be done on Android at least.
Again, I have no silly sense of entitlement about this. But it sounds like you do want to support each platform as much as possible, so I'm just offering suggestions on that. For my job I'm an Oracle DBA, so I'm beyond comfortable working with a database without needing a full save editor.

Based on our very small budget, we had to make the tough call to focus 100% of the modding support efforts on Steam.
Our next title has a complete cloud-based save synchronizer that will work across platforms.
