Well, I got attacked and this time they blew out my hull and it was the message about the hull being breached. So now I'm sailing around in Escape Shuttle #2 and I'm currently looking for another escape shuttle in case the same thing happens before I can upgrade to a real ship... You think the escape shuttles keep getting smaller each time?

Hey just so you know- when you drop below -35 RP, you are ALWAYS going to be executed. Also, the game does all of the RP modifications caused by the combat/surrender before deciding you will be executed or not.
By that, I mean think about this scenario: you are -30 RP with Steel Song in a badly damaged escape shuttle, carrying some weapons and a datapad that has some pictures of a Steel Song prince in compromising positions. You encounter a Steel Song ship and think to yourself "I'm outgunned but at least I'll only be imprisoned" so mash the "Surrender" button. Steel Song say ... you are carrying restricted goods without a permit (we'll take -4 RP for that infraction). Those photos make our prince look like an ass ... or maybe that was just the animal he was photographed with. For that affront, we'll take -5 RP!
This means your RP will be -30 - 4 -5 ... or -39 RP. They then proceed to detach your head from your body.
So the lessons from this story are: 1) Never surrender to Steel Song - ram or blow them up oh and 2) Always check your status, cargo, and missions before surrendering. Thinking might just help you decide to adopt lesson #1. 3) Attacking a ship before surrendering to it might also lead to -RP ... so try not to lose!

slayernz, thanks for that info. It's good to know that -35 is the breaking point for execution. I've currently got a Pirate on Crazy that's up to level 18 (knock on wood). It's the best I've done in a while and I know it's because I'm being a lot more careful about the Warrants on me and how I engage people when I have warrants out.

That is strange. An escape shuttle should not be able to have an escape shuttle. How would one fit inside of another?

Lots of duct tape and glue. You don't need to be aerodynamic in space

Whne you buy an escape shuttle for an escape shuttle you are basically towing a 2nd escape shuttle around. You and the crew beam aboard the second escape shuttle at the last second.

Huh? You can fit a WHOLE CREW in an Escape Shuttle?

Lossless compression.
Actually, you also have a few dozen space suits, and the crew that don't fit inside the shuttle spend time outside of it sharing the space suit (kind of like underwater when you share the respirator).
Funnily enough, within the first few minutes, you usually have more than enough suits to go around.

Hmm... I thought it would be a "duct tape and glue" solution again...

As in any classic adventure game, you use up all of the duct tape and glue sticking the two shuttles together. You need a different solution for the new problem.
Thinking outside the dodecahedron, I even came up with ideas including: 1) putting the crew into an industrial dehydrator. They get dried and preserved, you get their fluids as potential fuel, and when you get a new ship, you just add water and presto, you get your crew back.
2) Cryogenically freezing the crew. The ole snap-freezing them. Then if you put them in a radiation-shielding blanket on the outside of the shuttle, they'll be kept at only a few degrees above absolute zero, and safe from radiation. When you get a new ship, you pop em in a cryotube, re-animate them and they're good to go (mostly).
3) The Futurama head approach Preserving the heads of the crew, and rigging the shuttle to interface with said heads is a very efficient way of having large crew yet small space. The bodies can be stored in some locker back on your home world. If you're into boarding enemy ships, you'd use modified Templar armor that act as robotic limbs for the heads.
4) I saw it once on Stargate - putting multiple personalities into one body. It's very efficient because you gain all of the collective goodness that are the minds of the people, but only need to sustain a few bodies. You can get a specialist weapons operator, engineer, soldier, navigator, cleaner all in one body!

"Yes, sir! Would you like to have some coffee while I shoot someone with a rifle, gut another with a plasma lance, replace the o-rings on the gravitational field generator, study on the star charts for the nearest port with our dry-docked ship, prepare the luxury rations for dinner and perform wifely duties for you?"
