Hey Bansh33, it's more that if you are a new player, you have no idea of the relationships that different ship statistics play ... You don't know that sails are the thing that gives you most efficiency, and that there are different levels of bonuses (at 20 sails and 30 sails there are extra efficiency bonuses).
Also, you don't know that having a "fast" ship is less efficient than a "Medium" or "Slow" ship.
Once you understand that more sails = more efficient, then the rest becomes a little more logical. 1) Large hull = less efficiency. The bigger the ass, the more snickers bars it takes to get it running. 2) More engines = less efficiency. A V8 is going to suck more gas than a 2 stroke. 4x V8 engines is going to suck down WAY more gas than a single V8. 3) More crew = less efficiency. It doesn't help that the fuel is also the food. 100 crew drink/eat more than 30 crew!
If you have those things in mind, you get a rough idea of what kind of mileage you are gonna get. Oh oh oh ... and as a big rule of thumb, a carrier or cruiser is going to drain the tanks way faster than a fighter or a cutter. If the ship graphic is a brick, it's gonna fly like one!
