I usually build Boarding Combat when I build combat captains, but now I'm trying the dogfighter and realized that i dont really know what all the upgrades do!
My question is on the best option for increasing Torpedo effectivenes on higher levels, Crazy and above.
0. can torpedoes have enough of a chance to land at MEDIUM range to warrant burning a move on them at this range? What about with upgrades?
1. ARES? I can only think of this if you are fighting some giant ship that needs 5-10 torpedoes and you are flying a Mordi or something with 3 torpedoes default. Since torpedoes cost a fortune and this doesnt necessarily help land the 3 you already have, this seems like the weakest option.
2. Aft Battery - ok so this is what i am leaning on recently - mostly out of ignorance. "Better torpedo accuracy" seems to be much more valuable than more actual torpedoes. "Following retreating maneuvers" - does this boost mean you can actually land a shot at medium range if you went from Short -> Medium last move?
Does it just mean increased accuracy when your ship is pointing away from the enemy? and does this increased accuracy 'following retreat' (or pointing away?) mean that it is the same as base accuracy? or just a lessened penalty?
3. sails!
Since Accuracy of torpedoes are my principle concern, maybe the best option for torpedo lethality is sails?
4. what do the pointing of the ships mean when you are fighting?
a. i take it that being pointed away from the enemy gives you a penalty to torpedoes (to guns as well?) [this happens following a retreating maneuver]. does pointing away have other penalties? to guns? to dodging guns/torps? penalty to a subsequent advance? does it boost a subsequent retreat? or boost anything for that matter?
b. on Boards: i heard somewhere that ships on board will point in a direction showing advantage/disadvantage. So if you board, and you point up, you have an 'advantage' on all subsequent 'duel' attacks? sometimes i swear i see ships pointing to the SIDE (whereas normally one points up one points down). What does that mean?
