"Start at low difficulty and work your way up."
I think this single statement would probably solve a fair number of complaints.
I'm tired of customizing sigs every time I flash a ROM. This time it's plain old Torp City!

This time it's plain old Torp City! This is a really big one, yes. For some reason a lot of people who play ST start on "Hard" and then complain that the game is impossible. Usually they're angry and say things like "and this is coming from someone with thousands of hours of experience playing strategy games." Sometimes I'm able to convince them to try a lower difficulty, sometimes they write me off as an idiot and a bad designer. One thing that may be featured in later games is unlockable difficulties to enforce this progressive play model

Unlockable difficulties sounds like a pretty cool idea, although I could see some grousing about not being able to play on harder levels at that point, too. It's kind of a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" kind of thing. I imagine though, that this complaint will probably dry up a lot with ST2, since it will have the configurable difficulty designed in the way CK does. That way people can dumb it down and then pretend they're playing on a tough level when they're really not. What can you do though when, as they say, the customer is always right?
