Oh ... if you're going alien hunting, you'll find slim pickings on low difficulty levels. It'd be like hunting for sharks in a toddler's blow-up pool. Great Whites don't often frequent waters that are only 6 inches deep.

WAS enjoying it...while doing a routine courier contract I came across an alien for the first time ever. A bit annoyed to be honest. After putting lots of time into my character I was destroyed by seemingly invincible aliens without any hope of escape or victory! It seems very unfair that a random encounter can end your game without any chance of surviving. Why are aliens so powerful? What was your difficulty level? You should fear Aliens! I bet that the encounter was not that random as you think. Have you Sir been flying through unregistered sectors (aka red sectors)? Have you been admiring deadly beauty of the Dead planets? Only the most armed or crazy Captains do not avoid those as much as possible. Why? "If they take the ship, they'll rape us to death, eat our flesh, and sew our skins into their clothing. And, if we're very, very lucky, they'll do it in that order." ―Zoë Alleyne Washburne

I bet that the encounter was not that random as you think. Have you Sir been flying through unregistered sectors (aka red sectors)? Have you been admiring deadly beauty of the Dead planets? Only the most armed or crazy Captains do not avoid those as much as possible. Why? I patrol dead planets constanly to find and destroy aliens. I'm only at lv55, but I must have destroyed 10 of them so far, because I look for them. Patrol dead planets hundret of times to find them. They never even stood a chance against me (and I'm playing on imposible). Its because I hate alien scm, I love killing them, and I want to rid the quadrent of them permenatly Some advice to avoid aliens - Fly in green sectors as much as possible. You have a much greater chance enountering aliens in red sectrs than in green - Do not go over dead planets. Yu hav a much greater chance encounering aliens in orbit of a dead planet than a urban/wild planet - Stay in the upper left corner as muchas possible. The father you are from that sector (coordinate (1,1) specificly), the greater the chance of encountering aliens. 90%+ of my encounters have been in red sectors on the very bottom, very right, or bottm right corner of the quadrent, far awayfrom coordinate (1,1). - Donot carry Artifacts. Artifacs increases chance of accidents and ncreases severity of those accidens. They also can increase aliens' attack power tremendously. And they atract aliens. So don't carry any of them.

Some advice to winning vs. Aiens - Get the escape shutte upgrade. This way if you get a hull breach, you can escape. Also, if when boarding you feel you're not going to win, you can surrender and use you're escape shuttle. Otherwize, they'll kill you when you surender. - Have high boarding strength. Deending on the ship/LV it may be impossibl t defeat aliens by torps/guns or run away from them. But it will ALWAYES be possible to defeat aliens by boarding. Key to boarding: High warrior+intimidate and an upgraded ship with high crew+cargo capacity for weapons. I go for dragon cruiser, give it the battleship uppgrade, an escape shuttle, and cargo upgrade(s) to give me a fast ship with over 200 crew and the ability to store 50 weapons and STILL be able to have 60-70+ room for other stuff. - Get Templar, BH, and/or Templar officer(s). They all provde different boarding bonuses, with the Military getting a boost for each Weapon in-hold and Templar providing an extra boost when fighting aliens. You could get the vet, but cory stated he helps only close, gun, ram, torp and only provided a boarding bonus vs aliens with artifacts (which is bad as they could hurt you more than help you). - I requested that cory makes a new upgrade specificly designed to fight aliens called Heavy Leviathan System/Leviathan Command. If/when it comes out, you should get that as well. -Once you are at short range with the Alien, NEVER attempt to retreat/gun or even ram. If you were unsuccesful at retreat/torp/gun at long and med range, chances are you'll be unsuccesful at short, and the alien wil board you. Once at short range, press board. This will give you a chance of YOU boarding THEM, meaning more damage to them, less damage to you.

You can surrender and use you're escape shuttle. Really? I did not know that. I thought that only death by decompression is prevented by shuttle. BTW: Great anti-Alien info. Consider starting a dedicated thread .

escape shuttle will not save you if you surrender to aliens. Just lost a level 16 captain on impossible. I would therefore recommend ramming until one of your hulls gets to zero.

Well sometimes the escape pod saves you. But if your crew is low, so you are absorbing damage meant for them, or you are down to 1HP, it won't save you. Was either of those conditions happening for you shallowthought when you died?

I was losing, had taken damage to crew and health. I'd say its unreliable enough you should just stick with ram though, you might get lucky and win, which I've managed a few times.

In the battle board display, a pair of DeValtos and Steel Song ships traded torpedoes plus barrage fire. The Steel Song warship gunned its engines and headed in for a vicious ramming action. Just before impact, something, that looked like a kitchen sink, flew out of a torpedo tube and struck the DeValtos armor. "Is that really a kitchen sink?" Rabid Rabbit asks, for the first time in many a year truly surprised. "Umm .. checking, Captain." beep beep .. bop .. "Confirmed sir .. that's a kitchen sink." Rabid Rabbit rubs his chin, "Stop our advance, remain in stealth." Bonnie arched an eyebrow, "Okey dokey. What's the plan though?" "The best of plans," Rabid Rabbit calls the kitchen, "Hey Mac. Bring up a pair of big bowls with popcorn." "Say what? Popcorn?" "Yes, with extra butter." "Um... ok Captain Rabbit." The bridge crew is looking at each other. Rabid Rabbit smiles at them, "Oh come on, lighten up. Someone out there torpedoed a DeValtos ship with a KITCHEN SINK. At the very least someone with that sense of humor can live an extra hour before we burn their ship around them." The Mad Rabbit leans back, "Let's sit and enjoy the moment. In the long run, brothers and sisters, its memories like these that last a lifetime." rabid

Its not unreliable. Escape pod saves you from execution. Just surender before your down to low crew/HP and you'll be fine.

This is exactly why I stopped working for Steel Song in my games, that's actually in the manual they hand out, under the heading "The advantage of surprise"

the escape shuttle really should save you from execution even at 1HP, because you'd escape before thy can kill you.
Also, does Strength and Intimidate play role in whether you lose HP when surrendering, or will you ALWAYES lose 1HP when you surrender if you were first hostile?
