Do hostile pirates ever have a different tactic other than ram?
started playing again after a long layoff.
Created a new captain in insane to warm up for impossible.
First 2 hostile pirates (from a faction that I have positive rep), the only 2 opportunity they had to attack me, they used ram.
Seriously? Ram? how dumb or daring (maybe) these pirates are? Isn't a pirates goal is to get cargo and get out alive?
I know this issue has been brought up in the past, and I thought it was taken care of. I have less motivation to play this game and work hard to be smart and tactical if my enemies only uses mindless ram attacks.
Come on Cory, fix this please. I was assuming that the higher the difficulty I play the smarter and more dangerous the enemies are, not dumber and luckier.

I never thought of ram as a stupid tactic. There have been several times when I had been dominating in combat when some random pirate a few levels lower than me comes along and punches a hole in my hull. Frustrating, yes, but stupid? No. Similarly, I have defeated ships more powerful than mine by ramming my beater into theirs.

To protect yourself from ram, you want high engins + pilot + armor + hull. Id go for resilient cruiser and get the dreadnought arch and hyperion superstructure to give it 38 armor. And get the heavy bulkheads/impact sheild if you REALLY want a ram warhorse.
Or you coud go for the pirate ironclad, and get the dreadnought arch and hyperion upgrades to give it 41 armor (the pirate ironclad is slow though). Or the slayerz cruiser and get dreadnought, hyperion, bulkheads/impact shield, titan componens, and advanced bridge. And get the pilot + spice andinvest heavily in pilot. This will make it almot impossibe to be ramed.
I always get the escape shuttle so if I'm rammed and my hul is breached,I could escape. And I alwayes have some good ships in stardocks over the quadrent so I don't need to travel far to get a good ship.
Being a ram hater myself, I know that there are many strategies one could take to prevent themselves from being rammed. It all depends on what you focus on (torp gun board ram) as your primary way of attacking, what ship you want (fast quick medium high crew low crew big small), etc.

I was assuming that the higher the difficulty I play the smarter and more dangerous the enemies are, not dumber and luckier. It was yet another fine day in the history of Cadar Piracy. The still boiling wreckage of the Independent Space Hawk continue to emit secondary explosions as the ramming prow of the Carrot Stick withdrew from the carcass. Bonnie lounged in a chair idly fiddling with his auto-pistol. "I just don't get it. Why do you love ramming so much? It always bends bulkheads and there are so many other ways for us to screw our targets with." Rabid Rabbit arched an eyebrow. He was conducting similar maintenance on his trusty gut ripper of a chainsaw, "Honestly?" Rabid thumbed at Zonk McDugal, "Every time I give the ramming order, Zonk over there pisses his pants and gibbers happily before going into a rant about beautiful flowers fucking and thorns mating with seeds. It is the most hilarious shit I ever seen in my life." Bonnie grinned, "You ram ships because it makes you laugh?" "Is there a better reason?" rabid

Seriously? Ram? how dumb or daring (maybe) these pirates are? Isn't a pirates goal is to get cargo and get out alive? Last time I have checked the Ram was pretty effective tactic against ships which are susceptible to ram - such as Fast/Quick paper-back crap. If the attacker deal more damage than he sustains, it is a good tactic and works great. I see nothing stupid behind it. I have checked my last boarding attack and it was 187 damage to them and 51 damage to me, which does not differ that much when compared to ram. I do not understand why you see ram as stupid, dumb and just lucky. Apart from it being effective against you .
