Some aliens have the ability to turn your engines against you, in addition to other things like turning your artifacts into weapons or making your weapons not work. You have to have more pilot and stealth than normal to be able to do ranged combat (more stealth for long range, more pilot for short range). You have to have more warrior than normal to be able to do boarding. Their magic abilities combined with their high levels and better ships make alien hunting really, really risky. I should know, I used to be the most famous alien hunter on the forum. Until that one day...

does the Shalun Mercenaries (type III) + 15 crew upgrade work boarding the aliens? they don't technically have weapons.

I remember Cory saying that each Shalun merc fights with 30% better skill than normal crew. (I think 30%) Its a skill upgrade, so I think it would be exempt from weapon penalties of aliens.

does the Shalun Mercenaries (type III) + 15 crew upgrade work boarding the aliens? they don't technically have weapons. Any boarding upgrade bonuses work against aliens. Its just weapons that can be negated, and only on rare occasions (I think). The biggest bonus that the mercenaries gives is its crew bonus: 15 of your crew will be twice as effective as normal crew. Also, each weapon normally increases crew effectiveness by 30%, but for the first 15 crew its 60%. So mercenary crew are 100% more effective than normal crew with no weapons and 130% more effective than normal crew with weapons.
