I am trying to find out if you, our favorite RPG players, will be sad at us if we make a game that is designed to be wider than it is tall.

It really depends on how u design the interface within the game itself so actually its not whether its landscape or not, but rather whether it suits the design of the game. I trust that whatever orientation you choose, you will make it appropriate for the game play

I play Star Traders in portrait, but I've played landscape games before and it hasn't killed me yet.

I think I would prefer landscape. On the Droid X it has the thicker top which lends to easy holding with the left hand and free playing with the right. Plus no stray fingers are on the screen from the left hand.

So long as you design the UI around that fact, it'll be great. Make sure the buttons don't take up half the screen?

I play mostly in portrait mode on my Nexus One because I think the screen is too cluttered in landscape mode.

I wish I could lock Star Traders into portrait. I often play laying on the couch while watching TV and it changes to landscape on me. In my opinion, Star Trader is really best in portrait.
That said, I agree with a post above that if the interface was designed specifically for landscape, then I'm fine with it.

I will look to see if I can enable a portrait orientation lock via an option.

Thumbs up for the portrait orientation lock! Lots of apps have an option for this.
