It would be nice if you could. Maybe there culd be an uninstall fee to make it balanced. This way if you decie yud rather have upgrade x and not upgrade y you don't need to by the same ship again and get all the upgrades again

Yeah, but then they'd have to remove that warning that the upgrade is permanent...

The game's database just doesn't support this in ST like it does in CK.
After lots of these threads have been posted, we updated our approach to make the saved game enable removing these types of upgrades. You'll see that in CK and in TA and in future games.
It isn't possible at this time to incorporate this suggestion in ST.
