I'm alwayes getting rammed by ships and my escape shuttle gets jacked on my way to the nearest planet. How do I help protect myself from Ram? I got the Impact Sheild Generator but it never seems to help enough to prevent me from dieing.

Surprised no one helped you.
Its not as simple as "This is the technique to protect from ram" Is a combination of factors a player has to keep in mind.
1st. What type of ship captain are you fighting against and what type of captain are you?
As a, mainly, pirate captain. I am strong in Stealth/Piloting/Tactics. I generally suck at Warrior and Intimidate. This means that I am great at long range and mid range combat, and I suck at boarding.
Now I factor in the captains I am fighting against: If its a Pirate I weaken from mid range, then once the enemy ship is damaged severely, move in for one or two more targeting of engines or some such. Weak ship, less chance of being rammed.
If its a MO/Star Trader/Zealot/Bounty Hunter (specially at 50+ levels on Crazy-Impossible difficulty) enemy ... I NEVER get close enough for boarding. I blow em up from a distance, thank you very much. Not going closer than mid range? No ram either.
Another detail is keeping track of your stats. Stealth counts for twice as much when computing Enemy captain levels. So, as a pirate, I keep stealth around 10-15 points lower than my Pilot and Tactics skills. I start the trend after I reach 20 with stealth.
Remember, ALL captains will require high Pilot skills. At the very least you will need the stats for closing on an enemy.
As a Military officer/Bounty Hunter and just every captain class that focuses on closing with the enemy. Board the enemy as soon as you can. Initial boarding has a great damage boost. You will want the MOfficer subordiante, plus weapons for the boarding bonus. Choose a ship that has high AGILITY, Engines, a lot of Crew, and good Cargo space.
You might want to invest in the ramig protection ship upgrades, but ... honestly ... its a waste. I usially pack either more crew, Water Fuel Tanks, and pump up Sails or Engines. The escape shuttle is almost mandatory...

Put points into pilot, get the pilot officer and carry spice. If all else fails, surrender. If you haven't pissed off the various factions too much the worst you'll face is prison.

Recent releases have drastically increased the Ram power of:
Impact Shield Generator Heavy Bulkheads (soaks Crew damage) Battle Prow Pilot Officer

Wait so does that mean that the battle prow helps resist ram more than dreadnought architecture?

Resistance vs. Ram = each player's (PC and NPC) pilot skill, ship speed, engines to hull ratio, engines, armor and hull
A high engine to hull ratio is good for evading enemy ram and decreasing damage from enemy ram. So get a ship with a high engine to hull ratio (2:1 or more is best)
Ship speed will do everything that a high engine to hull ratiowilldo, except it plays a much larger role. QUICK ships are awsome at dodging ram
Pilot skill will also evade enem ram and reduce damage from enemy ram. Invest heavily in pilot to help decrease the enemy's chance of ramming you succesfully.
When you are rammed, the damage goes almost directly to the hull, armor and/or engines. So a ship with a lo of armor and engines will be able to withstand more damage from enemy ram attacks
The higher your armor to hull ratio, the better your armor will withstand ram damage. Having your armo greater than your hull is best.
The Pilot officer will increase your Pilot skill (even more so wen you carry spice). He also provides a special defense bonus vs. Ram damage
The Impact Shield Generator will help prevent damage from enemy ram (by a lot).

Another factor to consider is the size of your ship. The larger your hull size (compared to your opponent), the less impact his/her ram action will have on your ship.
So if you are sitting pretty in a behemoth of a ship with 40+ hull, and he tries to ram you with a shuttle, he's going to be more of a smear on the side of your ship than anything else.

Odd how many dead Captains I've had who got that way after being repeatedly rammed by low level pirates in tiny ships like pirate shuttles, while the were in Assault Skylifts, Harbinger Carriers and the like... The law of averages seems to tilt in the ramming pirates favor...so while you may shrug off more attacks with a larger ship, eventualy, and usually at the worst times that level 1 pirate with a pirate shuttle, will not only survive his first kamakazi run at your level 20+ captain in his big ship, but will do serious damage to said big ship, then proceed to survive a 2nd, 3rd etc run at you until said big ship is destroyed. If by some chance the first low level pirate fails, never fear he has several friends just waiting to make their own suicide runs at your ship and captain. To be honest its one of the few things about ST I truly detest. I don't mind so much losing fights, especially against equal or higher level captains in decent ships. However can't count the number of captains I've lost to very low level pirates who's sole tactic was repeated ram attacks.

Ship agility, engine to hull ratio and pilot skill is a huuge factor. Let's say an enemy pirate has a 10 hull ship, with 26 engines, quick agilitiy and twice your level. And you have a 50 hull, 45 engine, low agile ship. You can easily die.
ON HIGHER DIFFICULTY, SHIP AGILITIY AND HIGH PILOT SKILL IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN HULL SIZE. Because of this, the best ships to protect yourself against ram are quick ships, not big hull ships. I had a quick ship (slayarz cruiser) and invested rediculously in pilot skill and no one was ever able to ram me and inflict any serious damage, on imposible difficulty. Then I switched to a big hull ship (carnifex cruiser) with low agility and was rammed to death almost immedietly. The following is in order of importance to protect yourself from ram:
1. Pilot skill 2. Ship agility (quick agility ia best) 3. Ship engine to hull ratio (2:1 or more is best) 4. Ship armor to hull ratio (armor greater than hull value is best -- obtained by getting a ship with armor close to or equal to hull and then getting armor upgrades) 5. Ship armor value 6. Ship hull value 7. Ship engine value
Ship agilitiy and pilot skill is most important for proection against ram, not big hull. Pilot officer, impact shield generator additionally helps vs. Ram. Battle Prow and Dreadnought Arch additionally helps vs. Ram. Advanced Bridge and Titan Components increase your pilot skill, which additionally will help vs. Ram.

Starfixer's right ... I was suggesting that ship hull value does have a part to play, but other factors are definitely more important for surviving ram. They had, for the most part been covered prior to my response
