I do a lot of traveling and I cannot play the elite edition without an internet connection because of the verification through Google Checkout

It only verifies once per update as far as I am aware. Have you tried starting the game up after updating, letting it verify, and then shutting it down until you want to use it?

ben - the suggestion by shallowthought should work. The license token is cached for a while., so if you let the game verify once, you can go offline for a whiel.
