I'd always get the Exo-Planetary Crawler in the Interior Upgrade slot when I was exploring. It seems to save my crews far more often than my Scout officer did.

I've been having a lot of luck with this build on the Insane difficulty level, but seeing as how this is my first exploration based character I have some questions. Namely, when is it a good idea to start expanding my explorations to include higher danger planets? It seems even if I get my exploration up into the high teens/low twenties I'm still having very little success in exploring anything more dangerous than a 6 or so. I so dearly want my captains to live into the midgame, so help me thread! Here's my captain thus far....

If I were you, I'd worry about that minuscule Pilot level first, lest some pirate waltzes up and blows you to smithereens.

Sorry about that. His exploration is up to about 20 now, and his pilot/stealth/warrior are all pegged at 10. Would you recommend putting more points into warrior? It seems that it helps my exploration.... sometimes. Other times I just lose 30 crew and take a wound.

Welcome to the forum Lautrec! I'm looking forward to seeing what happens to your captain in the future johndramey... and yes, make sure your warrior skill is beefed up, you never know when it might come in handy in combat!

I don't do a lot of exploring but if I understand it correctly intimidate plays a role in the size of party you can successfully take exploring. High crew with low intimidate will lead to a lot of casualties in your party.

Welcome to the forum Lautrec! Happy to be here. Been playing the game for about 4mo and perusing the forums for about 2 weeks. Never seen a game with so much support from the devs, let alone a mobile one. Lately it's all I've been doing. Yeah, Intimidation plays a huge role in how many crew you should take. My belief is Explorer + Intimidate = party size. Correct me if im wrong, im no expert.

No matter what class I am playing or at what difficulty level, I have found that at least five points in explorer and hunting on Ugolhush (-10, 9) is a great way to get a head start. I once had a great lucky roll and with my explorer skill at 1 found 29 artifacts. Although the planet has a rating of 2 for exploring and gathering, it has a lot to offer. I have mentioned this planet in several other posts as a good place. I think every class can benefit from having a few points in their explorer skill. One other thing I have noticed is that your cargo size helps in how much you can find. Not sure how this works but every time I can increase my cargo limit, the amount of things I find goes up too. A good hybrid character for me is using the Zealot class and playing as an explorer for the first few levels. I get the explorer skill to ten then start raising the others. Explorers can make enough money for a new ships within the first few levels. Which can make surviving a lot easier especially on the harder levels.

Well sorry to disappoint you, but that captain suffered a death by alien. Managed to meet one, not be able to run away and get blown away. I've started working on another smuggler/explorer, but he's still in his starting stages. If he gets a little more experienced I'll post him up here for all to see.
I honestly never even really touched the intimidate skill, maybe I should start putting points into that skill haha.

My experience showed I lost less crew members if I invested in intimidate skill.

No matter what class I am playing or at what difficulty level, I have found that at least five points in explorer and hunting on Ugolhush (-10, 9) is a great way to get a head start. If you like that, you're gonna love this! The best planets for exploration is where the Explore value is higher than the Hazard value (the EH ratio). Ghactllli (13,-9) has Hazard 6, Explore 7 (EH = 1.17) Ihaca-3 (19,-9) is identical to Ghactllli, but is quite a bit out of the way Tucanae-Javat Mining (-2,-5) has H=4, E=4 Refuge Camp (-9,-9) has H=6, E=6 Kalflange Outpost (-8,-3) has H=6, E=6). There are a bunch of others that have an EH of 1, but their Hazard level is 10+, so you're gonna get hurt while you find good stuff. So of the list above, what are the two that are magical for a newbie explorer? Tucanae-Javat Mining (-2,-5). Start as Javat, and you've got the Urban and Wilderness area on the same planet. That means you'll be able to sell stuff that you find really easily. Ghactllli (13,-9) is but a stones throw away from Xi Clan World. Yes, it's a Steel Song planet (sigh), but you won't find any other planet with easy access that has an EH ratio higher than 1.

I have been to some of those planets, you are right, their great ones too. I start hunting them once I have built up some skills and got some good upgrades.

When I explore I mostly stick to Tucanae-Javat Mining, Kalflange Outpost, and Delta-Hydri-3 (harvesting only). The planets with higher hazard & explore ratings don't usually give me any more loot, but cost me a lot more crew deaths.

I don't think he was part of any covenants. Praise the sun!
