Do y'all think it's worth it to have different ships to fill different Roles? Like should I have a ship for fighting and another for blockading?

One of the reasons the game let's you have 20 ships. On for blockade, one for trade, another for exploring and few for stealth. Different upgrades, cargo loads and hulls allow for a lot of specialist ship setups.

I like to have mission specific ships once I've got my captain established and my bank account can support it.
Having a ship with a combination of firepower and large cargo means I can maintain an effective blockade longer.
If I'm doing bounty hunting then a fast/quick ship will be better suited since I'm not planning to be out of ports for extended periods of time and getting the extra edge in combat makes me more successful.
Spying is all about stealth and being able to maximize your time on station, so I'm willing to give up combat effectiveness to gain an advantage there.
For trading the focus is on cargo capacity and low fuel cost with defense being secondary.
With proper upgrades many ships can be used for multiple missions, but having customized ships can make you more efficient.

Cool. I'm going to need some more money then.
I have a related question.
I remember reading somewhere that flying in a ship from a faction other than your own makes the military not trust you.
What does that mean exactly? If I buy a ship from another faction is my military going to blow me out of the sky? Does rep/rank factor into the "trust" equation? I have 3425 Rep and rank 20 in my starting faction. Is anyone really going to question my loyalty?

Back to the OT, there are a bunch of dimensions that ships can be measured on ... efficiency (reduced fuel consumption as a result of high sails/hull ratio, low crew, lower engines/hull ratio, etc) combat with weapons (engines/hull ratio, guns, torps, armor, hull size, etc) combat by boarding (engines/hull ratio, crew numbers, etc) stealth (ship signature, hull size, crew numbers, cargo hold AND cargo carried, etc) capacity (cargo hold, hull size, etc)
Having a few really stealthy ships to do the surveillance and delivery missions is very useful. Having some bigger ships to take advantage of surplus/shortage situations is great. It's obviously usefull having combat-ready ships primed for those missions where the only good enemy is a dead enemy, and some efficient long-haul ships for the bits in between.

Yeah, but the Terrox Alien will have a stealth signature of a flying whale. Actually a pod of flying whales flying in close formation. Actually a pod of flying whales wearing multi-frequency subspace transponders and flying in formation.

All the better to attract all those scurvy Cadar and Rychart dogs to me so I can crush them and scoop up all their goodies!

Do y'all think it's worth it to have different ships to fill different Roles? Like should I have a ship for fighting and another for blockading? I am pushing with one of my characters (spy) to get to 150+, and using multiple ships is making it easier. I have specially setup three Hyper Freighters for blockades, surveillance and trading. I also have a Tiberia Jammer for running planet to planet missions. I am SURE the Jammer could fulfill all these roles, but having this setup allows me to capitalize on each event and make the very most of the experience possible. When I was barely making enough money to keep myself in the top ship for my level I kept only one... Now that I have more money than I can possibly spend, I can't see a reason NOT to have multiple ships. Hope this helps.

Level 150 ... nice I don't think I've hit 150 any time in the last year (in high difficulties that is) - I can't count my first captain who, because he started at Basic, is immortal )

I am the first to tell you I suck. I cant keep a Crazy or higher captain alive thru 10-20. I am currently bouncing around hard-crazy working my way thru the game, but my fallback character for fun is just demanding. I level as fast as I want, can do anything I want and goof off when I get my butt handed to me on Crazy. One day I will be a truly EPIC Star Trader... but for now I am content to be a pretty good Star Trader who is having lots of fun!
