The Zendu Cutter is a pretty nice ship that doesn't require an unlock. One of my faves though is the Spear Cutter. 145 cargo, fast/quick, and an ARES missile system upgrade makes it a reasonable fighter as well, with pretty good fuel consumption.

I play on Impossible, have everything unlocked, gotten top military ranks, and have never seen either of those ships. Maybe not in the iOS yet?

iOS doesn't have access to ships of power/rank/power II. All of you IOS players are learning to be much better Star Trader captains than those of us who play on Android. Wait until you see the Honor of Thulun ... vae victus! Grävling

Wait until you see the Honor of Thulun ... vae victus! Grävling those are fighting words. Right now I feel because our fellow captains on IOS are lacking some ships. The Honor of Thulun will even things up I agree.

I think the biggest cargo hold ship we have (non-alien) is the Admiral Raider with 80 crew, 85 cargo. Probably the best ship with engine/sail/hull ratio is the Spear Class with 16 hull, 34 sail/engine and a decent cargo size. Lol. That's what we have to work with.

If some high-end ships aren't in your version, then enemy captains aren't flying them either, so you can look at it as a more even playing field.

Yeah, you iOS users have the upper hand in that we Android folks were the guinea pigs in Cory's torturous game changes and updates. Just never ask about the incident involving jumper cables, the Roseanne dvd boxed set, and a chuahua. Those were dark times...
Anyway, I dunno how far along in available content you guys are, but I highly recommend jumping straight to Demanding, or at least Challenging. The lowest difficulty needed for any unlocks is Challenging, and there a handful available.
I was nervous at first too getting into the higher difficulties. Normal is more a tutorial than anything, and can teach you some pretty unsafe and unhealthy habits. Demanding is more like the "real" normal mode, and starts to prepare you for how much of a bastard the quadrant is.
Again, I don't know the extent of your version's content, but most advice given should remain relevant throughout.

So I've been pulling crazy hours at work for the past few days and only got a chance to play again last night... and I did pay a lot of attention to the rumors this time around. Despite miscalculating the amount of water I needed and having to fight off a few mutinies, I managed to make around 400k and put myself into a nice new ship, the Jango Class. It's insane and doesn't have any upgrades yet. I pretty much don't have to worry about anything anymore, because my captain's skills and ship are pretty much amazing. Now for my next goal, gaining ranks in some military org. I'm sure you learned by now, but in the Status menu, under the Cargo submenu, there should be a short chart telling you the difference between red zone fuel consumption and green zone fuel consumption. It should calculate how far you can travel in your ship and crew's current conditionds, plus your Pilot and Intimidate skill levels. I think the First Mate helps as well, but I don't recall at thr moment. Hopefully this helps.

I would say that hardest thing to learn and also to avoid backsliding on is the urge to click away like you are typing instead of playing a game that requires some thought. It is made more difficult by the fact that because it is not a demanding game processor wise it will go almost as fast as you can click with a few exceptions and the caveat that the popups will lag behind. This is a dangerous way to play and I advise against it .... even as I still do it sometimes.
