It may only be me but I kinda wish you could get more involved with faction politics, other than just being their errand runner. Possibly changing planets , brokering alliances, or even causing wars for your personal advantage. I realize this probably isn't possible in st1 but maybe future st releases?

I'll admit that this would be nice, but I imagine that it would be really hard to implement. Almost assuredly impossible in Star Traders as it stands, but if some system could be thought up, vetted, then implemented in ST2 it would be a cool little diversion.

Yes, unfortunately the ability to permanently influence Faction zones and Controls is beyond the scope of Star Traders RPG. Because all games share the same map and have different turn counters, it is impossible to implement changing planets.
Brokering Alliances is on the far future roadmap for Star Traders RPG, much like today your actions as a Captain can cause Conflicts and spawn Rumors (usually to your disadvantage, but anyway.)

Yeah I figured it wouldn't be possible in st1 but thanks for unintentionally confirming my suspicion that you can cause conflicts
