14. What are runners?
You always hire them for a week.
If you convert higher level runners they will cost more than 15 XP to convert.
16. You always need +rep with a faction to enter their VIP lounges. I think you only need a rep of 2, though it might be 3. Very tiny at any rate (which in my opinion is a bug.)

Darn, I just can't see it Gravling. It can't be that clear cut.
It undercuts a lot of the divisiveness and social strata of the NBZ. I'm trying to see how ALL the factions would put themselves in the hands of the Yakuza (corps included). and I can't see it by a long shot.
Whoever controls the water in a desert, controls the land. BNZ exists in the middle of a vast toxic world. Relatively clean water is primordial. The corps would never allow a jumped up gang to dictate water rights to them. This is more so when the organization in question has a known history of opposing those in power, as you've stated the Yakuza do.
I think they'd sooner burn the Yakuza zones to the ground then be that vulnerable.
I really want Andrew or Cory to clear this point up. It would really help.

Okay just my take here, but there are a few things I think are being missed. The factions are not Governments, they don't want to be and aren't trying to be. Each faction has its own agenda and goals which are often in conflict with other factions. There is most likely some form of "City Government" that exists and is suppossed to be responsible for maintaining the place and running utilities. Now Corps with plenty of ¥ can pay to make sure that sort of maintenance takes place in the areas important to them while the erstwhile "civil government" cries about lacking the resources to provide the same level of service to all sections of the NBZ. This is more or less an extension of what you see today.
While the Yakuza may control the Zone the public utilities are in they likely don't directly operate those services. Furthermore, for them to cut those services or otherwise try to leverage them against the other factions would be tatamount to an open decleration of war, which is something everyone is trying to avoid.
I base my conclusions on a couple things:
1) We know Mars Corp built the dome. Somebody paid them to do so, they are a business and not a charity. If Mars had built a dome using their own finances they would have no reason to allow other Corps or undesirable elements (i.e. criminal organizations) in. Intel has built several large business campusses in my area they certainly haven't invited AMD to move into any of them.
2) The existence of CKs and runners. The Factions all have their own Security/Para Military forces. If they were interested in open conflict they have the strength to wage it without hiring free agents. Regardless of what they tell you as a CK the factions most certainly have their own loyal employees with Crypto Chips. CKs are rogue agents who are both expendable and deniable. This allows the factions to engage in a form of shadow war that doesn't risk an all out open conflict which no one wants. Dead people don't buy your goods and services, they don't pay for protection and security, they can't be employed to work in your factories and stores. Open warfare means lots of dead people and gains you very little if anything. Hiring a CK means you can cause your rivals problems and yet maintain at least semi civil relations with them.

Hey, first time to post on the forum, but I've been following this thread with a lot of interest and thought I'd throw in my two cents from recent playing. I'm not very far into development with my first knight but there still may be some story spoilers for some below:
Question 12. I was delivering messages up into the Mars zone in the far northwest of the NBZ and talked to a shop owner. She mentioned that all her stuff came straight from the Mars manufacturing facility in the Chicago Zone. That got my attention. I played it cool though and she let it slip that Mars was responsible for building both the Chicago and Boston domes and the underground railway between them
Anyway, I guess it's all still hush hush because I haven't heard any other rumors about that. I'll definitely be sniffing more around the backrooms in Mars to see if I can turn anything else up. If anyone asks... you didn't hear it from me and I don't know you, chummer.

grävling - taking it to a PM. [Ooops, that was from another thread, the one about KickStarter ] rabidbite - Cory and I are working on a response to your questions. Is it possible that we can agree that this would be a thread for game world questions? Could we take the questions about game mechanics and game strategy (10-18, excepting 12) to other threads? Thanks! We will get you some answers by the end of the weekend. We've been working on some pretty all-consuming secret projects over the last week.

Do you want me to make a Q/A about Game mechanics or just remove those questions all together? Keeping up 2 different Q/A threads would be very exhausting. This one takes a good couple of hours per day of editing. Hoping it will wind down. rabid

rabidbite - if the list isn't growing, you can keep them all here -- that is fine by me. I was just worried when it went from 7 to 12 to 18 ... ;D Working on responses now.

Each faction has its own agenda and goals which are often in conflict with other factions. Remember that we're shooting in the dark and trying to make sense of the world. With that being said: I agree and differ at the same time with your very eloquent argument. I think the Corporate and Security Factions are like governments. Picture them like plantations in the 1800s. The people that work in them have to buy the goods FROM the plantation owner as well. Corporate slavery, everything goes back to the source. I also think you're right about the water and services and the role of 'government', but I also believe there is room for both the Corporate Government and the Civil government. The Civil Government being more like how Gravling described it, a puppet without teeth. Thus, why I compare it to the U.N. I think it might be a case of 'evolution'. What the heck does that mean? The Mars Corp that built the domes isn't the same MarsCorp that is now the mega corporation, at least not in drive, direction, goals, influence and spirit. Thus, it might have built THIS dome and perhaps all the domes in North America, but it did so for SOMEONE ELSE. That SOMEONE ELSE invited the other corporations in ... and eventually that SOMEONE ELSE (government?) became supplanted by the mess that NBZ is now.

Oh, if what worries you is answering EVERY question, don't sweat it. See a lot of the game mechanics questions I am gathering so players have a main place to get directed to other threads. We're pretty much answering those on our own. Its just good organization to have a lot of questions referenced or answered in 1 spot. Auntie Gravling is VERY good here. I swear she's done it all. I hesitate to ask her if she's been to the moon, cause somehow she might send me pictures of when she went hiking on the Sea of Tranquility. Edit: Updated Questions with posted answers. rabid

re: heat
It might be good to add this:
If your problem is too much heat then: 1. Stay out of Zones with a Heat Wave Rumour. 2. Stop killing people. Avoid encounters when you can, run and escape away from them once they have begun if you cannot. Buy some non-lethal weapons and use them to stun and not kill. Nothing enrages the zone more than finding its sons dead in alleys. 3. Stop looting corpses. Instead of selecting 'Normal Exit' from your victory screen, select 'Stealth Exit'. You will generate a lot less heat that way. 4. If you do loot a corpse, press the 'Intimidate' button. This will cause you to generate less heat (assuming your initimidate skill is good enough that it makes any difference at all).

re: heat It might be good to add this: A little outside the scope of the question, you're giving ways to not -ADD- heat. The question asked was how to -REDUCE- heat. Either way I think it's close enough to warrant a nice inclusion. Good information Auntie Gravling! ..... i got to get you something nice for X-mas now, don't I? ;D rabid

Actually I've been posting *sigh*. I keep telling myself to stop, to go do something else. I mean I got work to do, but noooo. I sit down to work on equations and mathematical electrical designs, and end up staring into space with thoughts of the story. Its really distracting and more than a little frustrating. Some people suffer writer's block. I suffer writer's flood. rabid
