So I have finally made a captain who has survived to level 30 and as I fly around the quadrant I have to wonder what people think the best money making is on strpg.
So far it seems waiting for a shortage and fulfilling the need is the way to go based on time spent to money earned.

You would be surprised how much money you can make doing contracts, especially if you have an efficient ship and room for lots of cargo/water-fuel. You can make a killing if you can line up a couple of contracts going all the way across the quadrant. I once took 550,000 in contracts. I missed one of them so I ended up with less, but it's not bad. My basic money-making strategy is to do contracts and everywhere along the way get as many rumors as you can. Once you've finished a contract run, pull up the map and look for nearby shortages. Do the shortages and then move back to contracts. Personally I don't like flying anywhere without getting paid for it and I don't use caches, because I figure constant income is better than flying here and there to pick up stashed goods. A Hyper Freighter with the Advanced Solar Sails and an Omni-Stealth Array is nice for this. You'll sail all day without getting hassled. Though with that you'll probably want to stay away from capture/destroy missions.

Delivery contracts pay better for the same amount of game time, compared to exploration, trading, or surveillance. That's presuming you're not juggling the problem of losing high military rank levels.
But with surveillance (during Spy Battles) you get far more XP so overall I say that's more efficient.

If you get the right contracts, fees of more than $200k per job can be common. I've had package delivery jobs that offer almost as much (guys must have been desperate to get those Rychart Hat Fetish mags)

You only see them if you go in the secret room at a Rychart hat store.

Contract pay maximum is unlimited, and based primarily on rep and rank. I've taken 5 contracts at once and gotten 500k or more per contract! You want to participate in every solar war of tha faction until your rep is like 30k, then constantly go to the faction's planet taking 5 contracts at once (all with their destinationclose to each other).
Another way to make a lot is from blockade. Intimidate determines pay, and pilot determines how many blockades you can do before having to refuel. A high enough intimidate and you can be making over 7k per week of blockade for a year before having to re-fuel.

A hat is a receptacle, and torps are phallic. _______________________________ "Issue the standard Cadar greeting, Ensign." "But sir, that's one of our allies!" "I know that, Ensign. We're confirming that the treaty is still in effect!"

There is so much going here, but if all you Cadar boys want to go in some back room and look at other peoples torpedoes, I guess that's your business. I just keep thinking that Cadar is living proof that large bulbous heads are not any indicator of greater intelligence. In fact it may be a sign of the opposite.

Silla likes to show her torpedoes off to every passing ship, and she's a pretty nasty pirate.
So I don't think it's exclusively a guy thing. It's not like "Men are from Cadar, Women are from Steel Song" or something.
And c'mon, let's just admit it, more torpedoes is always better than less. When it comes to size of your torpedo bay, Size Does Matter. (so do sails)
