(advanced player thread) So I know that many of you start over ST to get the unlocks over and over again. this will be my 4th time and I am a little hurried this time, as I want to start finding the newer ships. Any recommendation for unlock paths for speed?

I'd probably start at Challenging and shoot for all unlocks at that level and lower, as there are a good number you can scoop up with just a couple of captains.

I tend to name my captain as the difficulty level I'm playing him at.
Award-wise I tend to go for high difficulty and then tag as many as possible at once. The quick contract ones tend to need me to make a dedicated captain for them, as do the rapid rank awards.

I've not unlocked everything yet and as such can't really give you a recommendation. I am a pretty sub-par captain, but find that Demanding is a good place to start. Gives you a lot of different awards to unlock. Getting rapid rank III and the quick contracts, now I think that will never happen for me

Hope for an early spy war, sail to a low security planet and surveil away, for easy rapid rank 3 anyway.

I actually managed to get Rapid Rank 3 today, got lucky with a solar war vs. Steel Song as Devaltos and just blockaded their planets for a while. Managed to do it easily, but it got a little dicey at times in combat. Needless to say, this captain will probably die a miserable death at the hands of Steel Song.

You made a good choice, I mean if you angered Cadar you may be in trouble!

Well done johndramey. That's one of the toughest unlocks. I have to go back and do it over again. Not looking forward to that.

I remember having trouble with that unlock. I don't remember if I did simultaneous contracts accompanied by trading contraband or did conflict participation.

Awards that have helped me the most: Hardcore Captain - aperio caliga Dark Nemesis (which is actually pretty easy to get once you understand what "two wanted flags" means - it means you are a "wanted criminal" by at least 1 syndicate and at least 1 house) ok, didn't help me much, but serpent's tooth is just so much fun. Expert Contractor (Spy) Rapid Rank II (Zealot) Big Tent (that extra 10 cargo early on helps) Syndicate Hero (Ships of Power; I find myself drawn to the cheap and effective Pride of De Valtos)
If I were starting over again... I'd start out in Demanding, get hardcore captain and Rapid Rank II and Expert contractor and whatever else you feel like, although I'd dump that captain preety quick because... It takes about 4 hours for a military officer to gain enough XP for level 50 by spying, it'd be far less for a spy. In those four hours you'll have unlocked quite a number of achievements, including Hardcore Elite.
Then you can go about getting the remaining ones on crazy or hard - I think rapid rank III should be done on the lowest difficulty possible.
For rapid rank III I got really lucky with a solar war against Rychart early on and just blockaded Occupied Baza with my Javatian Zealot. I got the achievement with 2 years to spare. Solar war FTW!
Just to note, I found most of the achievements to be easier on the Free edition, because your starting ships and the faction ships are considerably more powerful relative to the other ships in the free version. So, for pure speed, unlocking everything in Free and copying the captain might be faster.
However, through recent testing, I have confirmed that doing the above is considerably more boring (free feels so small after elite.)
